I am looking for recommended software to run a private server.

Now before you all pew pew me to hell and back, listen to my QQ :erm: (poor attempt at a rhyme)

I spend 6 months of the year at work (up north on this continent). And while we do have internet (laughable to say at least), we are not allowed to play any form of online games.

Well, a few of us WoW junkies were sitting outside this morning twiddling our thumbs whilst catching some sun we thought about setting up a WoW LAN.

There would only be around 3 - 5 of us and we thought it would be a cool way to pass our offtime here (Activities here are: Gym, walking around the helideck, reading a book, watching DSTV West and sleeping).

Questions:
1) Best / recommended software that is as non-IT friendly as possible (Our IT department here consists of 2 electricians ....)

2) Would I be able to run this off of a laptop and if so, what specs would said laptop need?

You can PM if you feel that by answering here, you would be contributing to the private server industry.

You talking about hosting your own server on ur pc for a lan of 5 people...
I dont know if it is possible, but MAN would it be awesome if it was..
sure you would miss out on the AH and 25mans/10mans etc but you could level with 5 of you constantly doing 5 mans and such..
awesome idea!!
 
great way to play hide n seek, why not use wow right :D

Sure, I'll post some pics. Mostly, you'll see water, cranes and a few helis. :) Boring life mostly.

Acid, sorry m8, everything is done via remote desktop (From Germany) but an awesome IT person would be, well just that, awesome. The whole setup here is sooo slow, envirulated (made that up) and often on the blink.

As to the rest of the replies, thanks, I'll have a look see over the next few weeks (doing my tax break, so another 8 weeks or so :().

it is possible because im doing it..and have friends connected to me thru lan.i use mangos server..if you pm me ill send you the link or files whatever..just follow instructions to the letter or it wont work
 
Ascent is your best option, I once hosted one for my own lan party and it worked nice. Unfortunately you do need some IT knowhow, but I have set it up way back using only a guide I pulled of the net. Will send you a PM with the details if I can find it again.
 
so I can host my own not connected to the interwebs server give myself GM status and power and stuff around in ulduar...
 
No, because Uludar is not included in the emu servers yet. I would go for Arc Emu.
 
I hope all your systems get infected with a very nasty keylogger. Except Jase, he has a almost legit reason for wanting this.
