I have a dual boot setup where linux works when I have my SATA drive in AHCI mode but Vista will not allow installation with AHCI enabled so I have to switch modes in bios each time from IDE(legacy) to AHCI.

So the 2 possible solutions I've found are:

To resolve this issue, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Exit all Windows-based programs.
2. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
3. If you receive the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.
4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
5. In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
7. On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.

Or to install Intel's matrix storage manager and then enable AHCI afterwards.

ASUS P5Q motherboard BTW

Has anyone had this problem before? which solution worked for you?

I would go with the Intel Matrix Storage Manager ;) Seems to be better than a registry change.

Ok, I decided to try the registry change first and it worked but only after a loooong wait for Vista to install the generic drivers so I just rebooted and installed properly after the reboot... I'll install the matrix drivers now and see how Vista performs.

Working nicely, I could have just installed the matrix software but the registry tweak is much safer since the drivers being installed are Microsoft's and I won't risk a BSOD.
