In Windows 8, open Windows Explorer, click view tab, and then enable “Hidden items” and close the Explore window.

Right click the taskbar and select Toolbar – New Toolbar. It’ll bring a folder selection window. Select the hard drive from the left pane and go to: C – ProgramData – Microsoft – Windows - Start Menu – Programs.

Select it and add it as a toolbar. It appears on the right of the taskbar. Right click the taskbar and un-tick the “Lock the taskbar” option. Drag the placeholder handle to the left of the taskbar.

Lock the taskbar again by right clicking. To open start menu, just click the little arrow next to it to bring the Start menu. [Via – Techtrickz.com]

Haven't we discussed this to death yet?
There must be about 15 different ways to do this mentioned in previous threads.

This way is quite sweet though - no add-ons required. Now we need a simple way to say "No Metro, not once, ever, f off, vat jou tiles en die".

Doesn't fix (my) main problem: I need a shortcut activated search that covers both applications and computer admin (e.g. control panel) that isn't visually jarring.

For that I don't see a way to do it without 3rd party help.

Shouldn't be terribly difficult to make. I would, but I like the new start screen.

In regard to Microsoft development, they should provide consumer choice. In another thread related to Windows 9… I would rather prefer service packs to increase consumer acceptance. Basic changes, like choices between Metro and traditional user navigation. Why cycle yearly?

Windows 8 is resource effective, only changes should be to the benefit of the user and what the consumers want from Windows 8 is everywhere available on the internet. Stay true to the product, but make it more productive, Windows must never be a learning curve, but an easy access to you as consumer production!

Another public informative decision/announcement should be is how to integrate Windows “8” devices on today's platform with each other. Inform the USERS!

I use Classic Shell. It's free, works great and I have no issues and it disable all the "modern ui" **** and gestures.

but I like the new start screen.
Yeah, dont mind it either.

The one efficiency mod I've done is to re-map the middle mouse button to the Win key using AutoHotKey. Now to flip between Desktop <-> Start all I need to do is click the mouse wheel, no mouse movements or key press required.

Oooo, nice idea!

Is there a way to get rid of the Start Menu and replace it with the Start Screen in Windows 7?

I would, but I like the new start screen.
Me too.

Windows key, then start typing. Or Windows key + X, then select Control Panel.

Customize Windows 8 Boot Menu & Permanently Enable Advanced Startup

http://www.addictivetips.com/window...oot-menu-permanently-enable-advanced-startup/

Windows 8 has received many cosmetic changes from top to bottom, and that includes the boot menu. Now called the Advanced Startup Options menu, it uses GUI elements instead of the legacy mode found in prior versions of Windows. How you enter the Startup menu has also been changed in Windows 8, as you can no longer hit F8 immediately after the initial BIOS screen to access it. Microsoft has shrunk the time between the process of invoking the bootstrap loader and POST, and the only way to enter the menu now is from within PC Settings. This can, however, create various issues. For instance, if your Windows installation gets corrupted and you can’t log in, you’d be left in the dust without access to the Startup menu. If you want to get rid of this annoyance, Boot UI Tuner is what you’re looking for. This small highly useful tool allows you to permanently enable the advanced boot menu, making it appear every time you power up your machine....
