We all know that this mess of a system will have to be re-written. Throwing hardware at it is not going to solve the problems. Any bets out there when this will be announced - 1 month, 3 months or 6 months?

Of course, in typical beaurocratic fashion, expensive consultants will be called in first to produce a report ("How many kilograms do you want it to be, Mr. Customer?") and to verify what everybody knows. You won't find a departmental official or a politician stating the obvious up front. More money down the drain. Hey! Wait a minute! I'M an expensive consultant. Try me! Try me!

Car-licensing system ‘still a problem’

THE transport department admitted yesterday that the new electronic national traffic information system (eNatis) was not yet in full swing, although it had stabilised.

Spokesman Ntau Letebele said the department did not know the size of the backlog in processing applications for driving licences, and could not say how many people were likely to apply for licences this year.

However, he said because the system was doing 600000 transactions a day, “which is double what the old system used to do”

That's probably because it needs 4 times more transactions to complete a single process. These okes seem intent on quoting supposedly huge "transaction" numbers. If we could take a look at the code we'll probably find the design is so bad it now takes 20 "transactions" to complete a registration instead of the 1 it took with the old system
