Hi there. I need to travel with a ring between JHB and DRN. the ring will be in carry on. How will this go through airport security as I obviously don’t want them to ask questions while the soon to be fiancé is standing next to me.

Nothing, just leave it in the carry on. Unless your ring is attached to something radioactive, or has a diamond the size of a tennis ball.
It's highly unlikely to set off the alarms when you go through security, but don't put it in any luggage that will be in the overhead rack. Not if you want to be sure it's still there when you get off, it's just not worth the risk. And if they happen to decide to part you from your hand-luggage at the plane (that happens), you won't have any recourse.

Flew with mine internationally, had it in my backpack and was never flagged. Domestically you could put it in your coats pockets and it should go through undetected but if you something goes off you are pretty screwed.

Edit: My comment was regarding the security screening. Ideally you should keep it in like a small removable pouch inside the carry on, once you have passed security you would take the pouch out and keep it on you. Or as someone said earlier, put the ring inside your wallet, and then transfer the wallet to the carry on for security, then put the wallet back into your pocket after security. Obviously don't drop and lose it.

No issue. I did it 2 years ago. I put it in my pocket. I made sure I didn't beep the metal detector. Reason for in my pocket and not in the bag is the x-ray machine. I didn't want security to have to have a reason to open my bag and look for something and then find the ring ruining the surprise.

I had a simmilar situation and nearly kakked myself going through security. I had the ring in my pocket and nothing went off thankfully.
