Engine change in vehicle

I know this has been discussed before, but thought I would ask anyway, since procedures change all the time and I would like to have the latest info...

Had to put in a different engine in my vehicle...what are the steps to get police clearance, and a new license disc, etc...my current license disc also expires at the end of the month, so is it better to try and do the whole procedure before then?
 
You need to take proof of purchase of the new engine to the SAPS vehicle anti theft unit. They will issue you with a certificate. First you have to go to the licensing department and get a police clearance form. If the vehicle is still financed, you have to get a copy of the reg papers from the bank. Once you have the clearance certificate, you need to go back to the licensing department and get the new papers. I went through this schlep not too long ago. Took me 4 days to get all sorted.

Where are you based?

I did this a few times at Waltloo Licensing center, you take the vehicle fitted with the engine, the receipt of the engine and police clearance papers that you get at the little office there, to the police clearance section. They inspect the engine number and papers, do an online check. They give you the report after updating the system. The Legal owner of the vehicle needs to be present...

You park your car and walk over to the licence payment section, get the new papers, pay for you disc and they print it out and you go home.

Takes a little more than a hour all in all maybe two.

Thank you...I'm based in Centurion

The car is still under finance. Do I still need a copy of the registration papers as Drifter mentioned? And since the bank is still the title holder, would they be considered as the legal owner and be involved in the process somehow?

Also, what costs am I looking at? Except for the new license disc of course.

Go to the registration office and get a notice of change form.

Take that form to the inspection centre. The police will do the Clearance on the engine and fill in the forms for you.

Take the newly completed form back to the registration office and they will change the engine number on system and give you the new license disc with the new engine details on it.

There is no other costs, and, yes you will need to get a certified copy of the registration papers.

Nope, the registration office changes the deed of the vehicle so no need to update anything.

Just get the forms, go to the clearance/inspection centre. Once the police have filled the forms go back to the registration office, pay and get the new disc.

EDIT:
You will need to inform your insurance company that the engine number has changed!

There could be a cost (minimal) for the new disc. As the new disc will be as of date so you will need to pay the balance for maybe a month or two depending on when the old one runs out.
 
Thank you for all the feedback...the old disc runs out at the end of the month so the timing is good.

Yea, should then just be a renewal with the new details.
Just remember to inform your insurance company of the new engine number. The deed will be changed so no need to inform the bank.
 
Just out of curiosity, I'm getting a new engine fitted later this week after my timing belt decided it's time was done. I do however have a fine outstanding as of last month, would this need to be payed off before I can do the above process?

Apologies if it's a silly question, still new to all of this.

Depending on the clerk you get, they have offered me the option of just doing the current transaction, or extending the license too, so if you ask, they might allow you to just make the change without the extra months of license. Of course it's also possible that they'll just do it without asking, or that they won't know how to do it any differently...
 
Hi Psion.

I'm about to do the same thing. However I bought the engine years ago and only put it in the car recently.. do the police query anything like that. I do have a receipt just worried about the length of time that has passed since I purchased the engine..

Nope, you just need the clearance. They don't know when you bought it or when you put it in. I know of people driving with replacement engines for years and only register the new engine if they want to sell the car. Legally that is wrong as the engine number on the disc is wrong and you can end up in big shyte. But the process itself doesn't ask any questions when doing it.
 
i bought a vehicle and did change of ownership but didn't take the vehicle for road worthy test.and the disc has expired .so now i have changed the engine and i need to register it some time next week.so what steps do i need to follow .do i need to take the car to road testing before registering the engine or what???

Note only certain places do police clearance.

1 Police clearance
2 Roadworthy
3 check change of ownership was actually done. You do need the original car papers(in your name) to do the above. If financed then you'll have to ask the bank for it.
4 Renew car license

I was reading through the comments and im wondering if anyone can help. My car got into an accident and the body was damaged but the engine is still intact. Is it possible to get a body and put my engine.

I’m based in Joburg

Hi....anyone who can help I'm posting on behalf of an friend. So he bought a car and its still on previous owners name after the engine gave him problems car was standing still and earlier this year we went to the traffic department to check the cost of renewal of licence disk for licence has expired. When we got at traffic department lady at counter told us that previous owner give ownership of car to someone else without him knowing and cant get hold of previous owner
