Hi all,

I drive a Polo Bluemotion and I've noticed that my engine makes like a *click-click-click* sound every time I switch it off by turning the key.

When it switches off with the start/stop system it's fine though.

I've never noticed it before and it very well have always been there. Is this normal?

In fact, I checked now, it even does it when I just turn the key to on and off again. Could it be the diesel pump just doing it's thing? I don't know. What I know about these things are pretty much nothing.

Could be either relays for fuel pumps or other ancillaries, or the flap that closes the air intake when you turn off the engine.
The fact that it doesn't happen with stop-start leads me to the first one though.

Prolly just a solenoid or relay going through its motions. Enjoying the fuel consumption, I'm sure?

I was also gonna say stop/start but now guessing that it must be a startup test thingy that checks all electrical systems are in order.

I haven't driven it to empty, I usually fill up when I get to 1/4 tank, and on my last 3/4 tank I did just under 950km, and according to the on-board computer I could have still gone for about 320km. The couple of times I've had to fill up my average L/100km was usually betwen 3.5 and 3.7l/100km. That is with about 90% highway driving, 118 - 120km/h (I'm generally not a very fast driver), aircon constantly on and radio blaring. Even urban driving doesn't seem to affect it THAT much once you get used to how to drive it.

I must admit, I am solidly impressed with how the little car has performed thus far. don't get me wrong, you have to adjust your driving style a bit, especially things like timing teh trafic on the highway, maintaining speed (which is easy with teh cruise control), accelerating gently when you have to, etc. etc. to get those figures, but when you get in the car you actually WANT to drive economically and environmentally responsible.

Only have about 4500km on the clock yet, so will see how things turn out further down the line.
