My 2003 1.6 polo sedan overheated about two months ago, and it turned out that my fan was faulty. I had it replaced the next day after having the car towed to my mechanic. There was no damage to the engine, since I pulled over and switched off the car immediately when the temperature warning came on.

The car has not overheated since, but I still feel uneasy about the car. The day the car overheated, the warning light came on, but the temperature gauge was showing 90 degrees. The water was boiling, so the engine was most certainly overheating. The mechanic checked my thermostat and water pump, which they said were fine (the also checked for blockages in the radiator, etc). I tried to explain the faulty temperature reading, but they said there was nothing wrong. I also notice that the temp gauge in the car NEVER goes over 90 (I would expect it to at least go over 90 in bad traffic).

Is the sensor that displays my temperature in the car, the same sensor that causes the warning light to switch on? Any other ideas? I would like to replace the sensor if it is not too hectic of a task.

Thanks
