Engine Trouble

The gasket must have blown as the oil is brown and sluggish. The engine did not overheat that I'm aware of. About two weeks ago I replaced the spark plugs as the engine was 'missing'/misfiring badly. Problem is that I drove for about a week with the badly misfiring plugs. I have been told that the block may have 'warped' when the sparkplugs gave in. The engine started making 'click' noises but runs nicely apart from that. As I understand the engine will need to be skimmed, so what type of costs are we talking about in average and worst case scenarios ?

The car is a Hyundai Getz 1400, 2008 model.

Post a pic of the underside of your oil filler cap and your dipstick.

completely stripped, skimmed, reassembled with new rings, pistons, head gasket, water pumps, cam belt, new clutch and pressure plate, the whole nine yards, cost me 12K on a tazz.

that was in durban. Parts came to 9K and labor was 3K.

Take an engine block to engineers is pricey, look at 3K to skim.

There are lots of ways for water and oil to mix if indeed that has happened.

We had a Hyundai bakkie driven with almost no oil, so the driver pretty much buggered up the engine, they quoted us R50k for a repair!
Eventually we just bought a new engine because it worked out to be cheaper

BTW Avoid Hyundai Strijdom Park like a plague

I should add that mine was done privately, and not through stealerships...

Also, you may want to consider just buying and fitting a new engine, it could save you some dough.

As long as the engines lubrication wasn't impaired too badly then it'll only probably need the top end to be done, but the fact that your engine oil changed color (indicative of coolant leaking in through the head) means that a teardown to inspect the innards will probably happen, I would budget about R20k

Find out what a complete import motor will cost you fitted before you go about fixing the broken one. It is a 1 day swap out job. Fixing the old motor takes at least a week because the motor must be striped, diagnosed, parts sent for engineering and then reassembled.

You can usually tell if the clicking is coming from the valve gear or the bottom end by timing the frequency of the clicks. If the clicking frequency is the same as the engines rpm then the bottom end is at fault(bearings, pistons, etc). If the clicking frequency is half that of the engine rpm then the valve gear is at fault.

just out of interest;

how many KM's you done with the car?
did you do all your services as should be?

any repairs prior to this? did you have any gaskets replaced previously?

also as I drive Korean myself; did you use the exact make of oil that specified?
I know Korean is extremely sensitive to what make of oil you use,
there a few threads with various Korean cars that only work if you use the right brand of oil;
hear clicking noises if you use the wrong oil type, had the same story with my accent;

I think with hyundais, its shell, but not sure if others with Korean cars can confirm;

You are going to laugh, but over 3 years only about 16K. I bought it with 32K on and it is now approximately 48K. I mostly only drive short distances to work and back, and to the mall which is very close.

Yes, service record is up to scratch with the last (major) service March last year.

But I doubt they checked the spark plugs which gave in a couple of weeks ago as mentioned. The spark plugs were also extremely tightly fit when I tried to loosen them.

Only other repairs was due to an accident (car was parked, other person's fault), he reversed in a long driveway into the front of my car.
It is not impossible that something was not properly fixed at that occasion and caused the current problems (?). Notably the overflow box was not properly fixed (I assumed the radiator would still function properly [under normal circumstances at least]).

No I did not bother too much and trusted the petrol attendants. Maybe I will be more careful in the future.

Avoid a dealership like the plague. I thought everyone knew this.

Initial guestimate of costs: R8000 to R8500 (incl. new head gasket & skimming). If the official quote is too high I will look for alternatives. (I took it to Carnetics in Centurion).
