What is the nearest translation in English that expresses 'Eisch' in Afrikaans?

It's always been my impression that "Eish" is a faily modern urban (Black) African expression or interjection of surprise, astonishment, or dismay, depending on context. Akin to "oh dear", "oh my oh my", "goodness gracious", "what a bummer", "that's not lekker but there's little/nothing we can do about it".

Ok, so it's Eish. Never use the word myself. I have frequently heard it and seen it texted so maybe finger trouble.

Eish is of African origin :erm:

You remember that alcohol ad where the black guy and white guy are sitting on a stoep and the black guy said "Eish" and then the white guy said "Met ys ja"?
