hi all
i would like to enquire about the setup of a wisp
i am aware that an ecn & ecns licence is required..
what i would like to know is what would be the best equipment needed with a radius of approx 6km
also the use of a wisp for both commercial & non profit (to service the community @ large), the reason for commercial is for the wisp to sustain itself, largely because of catering to schools & those unable to afford wireless connectivity.
also i have un uncapped (throttled acc with & isp), if i am able to set up a wisp , could i spread my bandwidth to the people that i am providing a service to ?
i joined jawug... but was reffered to wapa....

My honest opinion and this comes from experience, feedback and reality.

Take some money, burn it, throw the ashes in the bin and enjoy a happy peaceful life.

so the man on the street has no access to this ????
1 thing i do not want to do is provide a 'free' internet to oppertunists who piggy back off of the bandwidth i pay for... & yes i do realise there are many who do that ...i kinda just wana see what is the most cost effective way to provide a service ..where those that can afford it , pay for it.. & for those that cannot pay...well...it balances out...if it has to be licensed then...i understand that 2

The reason every WISP startup gets this kind of negative response is as follows:

Existing WISP's who are successful have generally been in the business for at least 4-6 years; most have been doing it for much longer. They have cut their teeth in an incredibly tough environment where they had to fly under the radar and pretty much break the law to provide a competitive service for those looking for an alternative to fixed line operators. Hundreds if not thousands of WISP startups have tried and failed (sometimes spectacularly) to make a business of wireless internet.

Generally the rule would be: If you need to come to the mybroadband forums to ask advise on how to start a Wireless Service Provider, then you are doomed to failure. You would need to do a massive amount of research into the required technologies before even thinking of starting up. By the time you have done this research you would probably not need to get information from anyone on these forums.

Aside from that most WISP's fail because they do not have the proper administration functions in place and they cannot provide the service and support that clients expect. It very rarely has to do with the technology itself. Wireless technology in all its forms is a reasonably mature and stable technology. It is the inability of the provider to deliver that give the tech a bad name.

Hopefully one of the forum administrators can change this thread to a sticky under a heading of "All startup WISP's read this first!" or something similar.

what is wierd is that some actually want to have the same attitudes as our current service providers...it is a shame

Erm, what are the terms and conditions of your ISP providing your uncapped bandwidth?

well the said if i broadcast illegally then i can be shut down, when i spoke to the techies there about a wisp they had no idea what i was ref to , but i guess they don't want a user to be logged on on multiple locations
