Any advice for a guy who has almost completed his BCom on entering the banking industry? What's the best route: starting out as teller; entering a graduate programme; or something else?

If you have your degree then bypass the teller route entirely. Enter a graduate program, RMB or Investec would be my first choices

Finished my BSc hons degree a few years ago and started out in a grad program. There is a lot of room for growth from the grad programs for both IT and Non IT graduates, lots of exposure as well. Would definitely recommend it. I applied everywhere banks and other IT firms, chose a bank, and really happy with my choice. PM if you want more info.

I've noticed graduate programmes don't allow people to enter who have worked more than a certain amount of months at a job. Thus not really an option for Unisa students who work and earn their degree.

It's number of months after completing degree.. and sometimes even in a role for the degree. Bank hr people are a bit dumb sometimes too, I applied for a job at one in their hr program(for IT) not long ago and got back an email saying they don't see where i fit in as i don't have Bcom .. lol.

Graduate programs are the best option. You would be rotated through all the departments so you would come out with a good understanding of how the bank works.

Also, when you finish the program you generally start work at a junior manager grade.

The big money is at head office. If you start in a branch it would take a long time to progress enough to get a move there.

It depends on what type of banking you're interested in, and what aspect thereof interests you. Banking is a vastly generic term for a what is a hugely diverse industry. Did you major in finance?

Majoring in financial/investment management. How does the remuneration look like for those in graduate programmes?

The guys in the grad programs do very well. I worked with quite a few of them.

Apply and charm the pants off them.... also I have never seen a batch of grads that are not multiracial. So there is pretty much a place for everyone.

Our grads became junior managers after finishing the program. The salaries for that grade start at R260k per year ctc.

If you're interested in the trading side of things, send me a PM. Same goes for anyone with a financial degree interested in getting involved in trading the JSE or SAFEX...

choose a grad prog, im in one, it can be hard at times, given that they give you courses that's got absolutely nothing to do with your qualification, financial management in my case, but it all pays off. You gets LOTS of exposure and it looks good on the CV. lol. pm me if you have any questions.
