No, no, this is not actually the first compliment to Sentech... [:)]

Well, I've been tracking my speed off and on over the last week and a bit, and have no taken up the cudgels, girded my loins, armoured myself with LG's friendly, but persistent, maybe slightly thick which-is-why-I-do-not-understand-the-explanation armour and phoned Sentech.

The Orc first tried the kbps vs kBps trick, but since I was too thick to understand eventually gave up and passed me onto one of the second level orcs. Hello Kallie *waves*. Kallie tried (1) contention ratio, and that my 5k download on a 256k connection was fine. I then asked him to take out a calculator and calculate - at a contention ratio of 30:1 - what I should be getting as a minimum. We both then agreed that I am a wee bitty under the 8k minimum.

Interestingly enough he tried to continue with the Contention card. I aced him with a slightly raised voice - not shouting, just slightly more persistent - that dial-ups are also contented, and - compared to my 128k ISDN connection - the Sentech one by far poorer. I also sited averages (download speeds, speedtests, etc) over the last couple of days that I have been religiously tracking. Furthermore, on my ISDN I achieved maximum / close to maximum speeds for most of the time, whereas with Sentech I saw a close-to-maximum download speed once (yes, once - I even have a screenshot of it) over the past week. In a slightly hurt tone (I mean, I trust Sentech, and now they are *sniffle* stabbing me in the back), I queried why I should be getting close to / under minimum speeds most of the time with Sentech whereas that nasty Telkom and their ISDN can give me such good speeds.

Kallie commisserated. Okay, not really - but he did open a ticket. And he tried commisserating by telling me that they only have control over bandwidth on the Sentech network, and once outside there are no guarantees. Yikes!!! Another stab in the back - so we are only guaranteed the contention ratio speed on the Sentech network! Luckily enough even Sentech's speed test was sub-contention ratio minimum, so Kallie couldn't think of anything else. Or rather his crib-sheet ran out of suggestions.

And then, a brainwave hit Kallie! (Some of us would think it was more a brainf*rt..., but not me as I've built up a rapport with the young man by now). "We haf been hafing problims", he countered confidently, "an we ur fixing dem". "Ah, okay - great", I replied. I could hear over the phone how Kallie's confidence lifted, at last he would get rid of me. Innocently [}:)] I asked him what the problems were - whether they were specific to a tower, or maybe something with regards to the software? One could literally hear a pin drop, and young Kallie resorted to the first thought that popped into his mind. "I... don't know", he confessed (mmm, story of Sentech's life, maybe?).

At this point I really did feel sorry for Kallie, and allowed him to give me my ticket number with which I shall have fun over the next couple of weeks / months. Not years, as I have only a twelve month contract.

BTW, I have also posted at http://www.hellopeter.com - a very nice, complainy website. For the shortened version of this sordid tale, point your browser to: http://www.hellopeter.com/details.asp?id=21948

Footnote: I guess with me complaining that there are now 1.09% of users unhappy...

welcome to our "select" 1% club ;-) ... but I'd have to admit that if the past 2 days are anything to go by I should be remove from the "select" club soon .. throughput has improved but latency has gone the opposite direction ...

Rodent when is the survey going live?????? I think it is time....

My speeds slow again tonight. I phone sentech and for a change they did not have any stories, just opened a ticket without any of the normal crap they tell you.

Speedtest result from my own server:
Transferred 256 kBytes in 60.0288 seconds. Your speed is 4.26 kBytes/s (= 34 kBits/s).

the test from bandwidthplace.com did not work because the test took to long to complete

I find it rather amusing that when you phone the helldesk the friendly voice says

"Please have your ticket number ready"

I assume this means that Sentech is getting so many faults they assume that either

(a) By default you are calling back with a previously unresolved problem.
(b) The RoDent / LoneGunman are the only ones who ever calls them because everyone else has given up? :-)

Well, I lost it Friday morning. Staring at a Sentech speedtest showing a huge 1.6kBps rating, I phoned the Orc at helpdesk to find out what is going on with my ticket, only to be told that 'Da second level Orks at IP ('Intentionally Poor'? 'Immoral and ???') saiz dat de speeds are normal an dat you cannot complain gettin speeds of 56k'. Upon which said Orc was treated to language that made my poor grandfather spin in his grave (I think he - the Orc - now has a better understanding of the ... ah, shall we call it the 'expressiveness' of the Afrikaans language...).

Very quickly I was put through to his team leader, the ticket was amended and my latest (non) speeds were added. Ye stock standard promises were made, emails handed out and all was well. For a while.

I have now started a campaign of phoning / emailing the Orcs and getting them to update my ticket number. At about 15:30 I decided, to use another of LG's tricks - to start at the top, to confront the Dark Lord himself. Yes, I speak of the one they call... Winston...

He was 'out and only back on Monday'. But if you leave a message, blah, blah, blah. Thinking quickly I asked to speak to his second in command - if I cannot get to the Dark Lord himself, one of the Ringwraiths will do. And I ended up with another email in my collection, and another promise of a phone call (Clinton, I will await your call with interest).

Introductions aside, I queried the ringwraith about what he does. 'I handle Customer service and problems'. 'Aha', I said, 'Then you are in luck, for I am a customer, and I have a problem'. I was tempted to say 'I am a problem', but I thought I will ease him in - ringwraiths can be dangerous creatures.

I must say, I was surprised at his helpfulness - he almost (yes, almost) restored my faith in Sentech. Young Clinton is the type of man that would be able to sell ice to an Eskimo if he puts his mind to it. I handed over my ticket number, explained my problem and my frustration. He followed the 'How to deal with upset customers 101' class notes down to a tee, agreeing sagely with some suggestions that were made. No, LG none of them involved you-know-what... ;)

One question I asked (and I have also asked that this is put on my ticket as I want an official answer) is how often can we expect the contention ratios to be applied. 10% of the time? 50% of the time? 95% of the time? Or do you only get close to maximum theoretical speed when there are chickens and virgins involved? Said Dark Lord's reply was that it should be only on rare occasions that one should suffer under the contention ratio.

Still wonder whether it is the official line that. Because quite frankly, if I have to suffer from contention for the majority of the time, the product is being misrepresented. They may just as well have sold a 512k at 1:60 or 1024 at 1:120 product as it is just all made up numbers from the appearance of things.

He also told me that there are problems, that there will be a report on Monday with regards to the problems (err, maybe, how about a fix?), and that he will call me on Monday. Also, that they do read this site, and complaint sites like http://www.hellopeter.com.

I am also tracking my throughput every chance I get, and supplying that to the Ringwraith and the helpdesk orcs. Have some pretty graphs from my firewall that shows throughput. Makes one very sad when looking at them... :(

Oh well, sorry for the venting people. It just feels good to get it all off one's chest.

Mintek Tower - Week up to June 11 was pretty slow. Past week was much better with average speeds at +-80kbs acceptable for my useage. Then came Friday. It crawled speeds down to 2kbs Speed tests timing out. I considered using pigeons.
So Sentech, change your % of satisfied customers it has gone up and I have my ticket number.
I was considering replacing my Home satelite and Telkom R7 with My Wireless, but my experience in June has soured that idea. I see Sentech reckons they have 3000 people waiting for the service to come to their area. Sorry Mr Smith its now 2999.

Incidently the satelite connection has a guarentee of 64kbs for a nominal of 128kbs but early this morning was 258kbs. there is a 32x contention ratio get it right and you have 2048. Problem is I WOULD like 7x24
May I correct the percentages. Winston Smith dealt with 52 users (probably dealt with them by deleting the voicemail messages) and announced that it was 5% of users.

Please note: he dealt with 52 users *personally*. How many other complaining users did he *not* deal with personally? 500?

Let's all nominate Sentech for "2004 - South Africa's best companies to work for"
