Entrepreneurs

I do like this thread though. I'm busy helping a friend with starting his own ISP and IT support business. So in a few months I'll be back to let you know guys know how things went.

I have a different perspective with regards to sharing ideas and that it is a negative thing to do since it would help the competition.

Take me for example. As some of you might know I started a website on financial planning. The aim is to educate South Africans on the importance of proper financial planning, and if they have a real need for lets say "saving for their child s education" then they will hopefully come to me to do that business. So basically the business model from the websites perspective is show people what they don't know. So if they come to me to get further assistance GREAT, if not then hopefully the info helped them a little.

Now my point of the above fitting into the theme of this thread is, what if their was more people like me and we worked together. We could direct traffic from our websites to each others websites, help each other write articles, create videos, refer clients that aren't in our geographical area. etc etc etc. In other words synergy 2+2=5

We aren't helping the "competition" we are helping ourselves and others at the same time. And hopefully in the process build up a good network of like minded people.

And to be honest this is what I love about this forum. If you have any financial question you can just create a post about it and hundreds of people will read your problem and help if they can.

But then you're just helping the competition.

Now if the point of your statement was " Dont tell the world you have invented the next paper clip until you have a patent", I in too minds about. The part of me that agree's with you says "Yes, it was your idea, and if you share it someone else will use your hard work and you will be left with nothing". But the part that disagrees with you says how will you make a success of it if you keep it yourselves. History is full of great ideas that took decades to reach their full potential, the invention sliced bread is a example.

I suppose conundrums like the above is what makes life fun.

Dude. No offence, but it's obvious that you "helpful" are just another form of advertising that you use to get people hooked to you or company.

No offence taken. I am a financial planner, financial planners get paid on their expertise and the advice that is given, which should always be "helpful". The information and videos on the website is free however. But I can see how referring to the website as a attempt to get my point across can be seen as "advertising", which if I am honest, it is indirectly.

This was not however the focus of my previous post. I was just trying to use a real life example on the subject and positive or negative feedback at my attempt to be a entrepreneur or my view on sharing ideas would be appreciated.

Do any of you watch Dragon's Den on DSTV? Channel 184, do yourself a favour if you're not watching it yet :)

For me the secret is not having all your eggs in one basket. I draw income from four different sources. The idea being to spread risk and not have one income stream slow down or collapse leaving me up shyte creek without a paddle.

As a salaried employee why couldnt you have another income stream or two? To me this is what being an entrepenuer is largely about.

What 4 different source of income do you operate, if you dont mind my asking?

I just got DSTV myself. What time is it on? Its about people pitching their business ideas to millionaires if I'm not mistaken.
Exactly!

I think it airs around 7pm during the week, I say think because I usually only watch the omnibus which is between 6 and 10 on a Sunday morning (drives my wife insane as I'm watching it in the bedroom while we're still in bed :D
