Entry level amp - help me choose?!

Cool... why would you choose the Yamaha over the Pioneer though?

I would chose the Yamaha based purely on the number of HDMI inputs tbh. it looks like it has 4 from the photo on the website.

personal preference and price

but i didnt see that if it has 4 hdmi rather go for the yamaha

Just confirmed on the Yamaha site that it has 4 inputs.

For me though.. shop around a bit and you could probably find it a bit cheaper in the short term since its a discontinued product from Yamaha as of a few weeks ago.

Isn't it also 3D?

Can't see if the Pioneer is ...

Those two choices don't have any audio processing via HDMi. Only HDMi switching (pass through). I would look for something that does process HDMi sound, if I was you. Even if it costs you slightly more...

Ok so haven't a clue what you're referring to... Yes an absolute novice!

Break it down for me will ya... Need all the assistance I can get!

Yup. The ideal is to get a setup where all sources are connected to the receiver through HDMi cables only. Then the receiver to the screen through an HDMi cable only. A good starting point is to get a receiver that does HDMi audio processing...

With those two, you would still have to connect the sound from the sources through digital coax or toslink.

You will need to look at something like the RX 467 from Yamaha I think....

Onkyo do have a nice sound...

I am personally fond of the sound that Marantz seem to make, just seems to be warmer and fuller

They both do HDMI repeating dude, not sure where you got that from.

edit: I deleted my post to edit it, but see that you've already quoted me :)
Repeating, but they cannot play sound from an HDMi input... Dude...
Repeating is audio over HDMI.

No matter whether you are watching HDTV or a Blu-ray with the Pioneer VSX-420 you can enjoy everything you see and hear in greater purity and precision. Thanks to the HDMI-Repeater a single HDMI-cable suffices to transmit video and audio digitally to the receiver. Video signals up to 1080p are also supported as the x.v.Colour and Deep Colour for the precise playback of dynamic, true to life colours with soft transitions.

But you may be right, there appears to be conflicting reports with this amp about whether it does repeating. The VSX-421 and VSX-520 definitely do repeating (and they're 3D ready), so that may be an option.

"2 x HDMI (switcher)". That means no HDMi sound processing by this amp. Only switching of sources relayed to the screen.

"HDMI repeater (4 in/1 out)" and "Audio input assign capability for HDMI and component video input". This means the same as above and also that you can assign a s/pdif, toslink or analogue audio input that the amp can use to play the sound, seeing as it cannot play sound through HDMi.

Repeating is not sound (from receiver) over HDMi. Processing is the magic word. It must say HDMi audio processing.

Wow these okes try to confuse! It's simple.

Pass-through = sound does not travel via HDMI, and must be connected via optical/co-ax (digital), etc. - 2 cables.

Repeating = sound is carried over HDMI. 1 cable.
