Entry level laptop for University student

Hi, I'm in the UK now and would like to buy a laptop for someone starting Uni in Cape Town.

Please can you recommend an entry level laptop between R4,000 to R5,000. Is Takealot a safe site?

You can try @Flashgear on the forum. I have bought a couple of laptops from him in the past. Would possibly get more bang for your buck with him instead of going through one of the retailers.

He is active in the Hardware & Software dealers classifieds section.
 
Not sure you'll find anything too usable with a budget like that. What is the intended use? Or maybe look at second hand or better double that budget.

He doesn't sell 5k laptops though.

Look through Carbonite laptop section, not sure I'm allowed to post the link here... Plead poverty there, and I'm sure a good Samaritan would be willing to sell you a good enough 5k laptop... If I had a good one, it I'd sell it to you... Good luck with your studies, what I did for my daughter was to buy a 6.5k laptop from incredible connection and over the next few months I upgraded it myself with components from tech shops, now it's a mean... ish machine... Runs like a dream
 
You can get a new Chuwi Gemibook for R5400 incl shipping from their intl site. But a used Tseries as mentioned above is a good bet.

At that price, just be happy that you get an SSD and 1080p display.
The RAM is on the low side and the CPU on the slow side, but that ticks the 2 most important boxes for me: 1080p display and SSD.

If you're [really] in the UK why don't you buy one there and send it over? I see plenty of sub-£200 laptops available on Amazon UK.

It`s not that bad on a 15" screen. A 15" at 1366x768 is better than a 24" at 1080p, and 24" at 1080p is standard.

I did not know my laptop is over R8000 new today, and its upgraded, I think R4000 is a good price.
