It's a Friday night. Enviroserv is at it again... releasing probable poisonous gasses and smells into the greater Hillcrest area. Despite ongoing complaints, allegedly thousands per month, this company still continues their activities.

They show no consideration for their fellow South Africans and place bonuses and profits before the wellbeing of their fellow citizens. In a nutshell - very sad indeed.

Waste disposal is something that is highly regulated these days especially when it comes to landfills and chemicals.

Do you have anything else to go on?
TBH Enviroserv is a respectable company and I doubt they would put themselves at risk.

They have been exposed before by the Green Scorpions as well as by the public numerous times in that area.

I admittedly just skimmed the links, lots of investigation/accusations, any findings to date?

This is all measurable according to what is prescribed by law.

I live in the area and enviroserv are definitely doing something suspect
 
If you go past that place it stinks like hell , do not know how the people in the area put up with that smell .

I used to live in Hillcrest but that landfill was to far away from me.
I have been down there a few times to offload rubbish and its not exactly a pleasantly perfumed environment, thats for sure, but no landfill is.
Lots of development in Hillcrest, how long has Plantations been around for instance, as apposed to the landfill site?

Plantations has the pipeline running through it without a doubt but that hasn't caused issues for 10 years+... you can watch the weather patterns in relation to enviroserv and predict the smell

How long has the landfill site at Shongweni been there, in relation to the vast residential developments in the area?
I can remember driving out to Shongweni landfill in 1998-9 ish already as a rep to dump 5L of paint or something. Wasnt much out there in the way of residential areas at that stage.
Even then, full tds and msds required to get permission to do so.

They will most likely not be found guilty. They have been toeing that line for many years. It was given the permission to be a high hazardous waste sight many years before the developments took place, maybe sue the developers as well.

Where will land be made available for waste and hazardous waste? That site must be almost up to capacity or has the government extended the life of the site.

People should stop just pointing fingers at one player in this game. They have been banned since October to accept hazardous waste. The government allowed them to be a high hazardous waste site. They extend the life of waste sites. They give out the permits. To the sites and the developers.

I do understand your pain, you should just try to dig deeper, try to stop the process deeper into the proses.

You name names but you only name a few of the smaller directors.
There are people higher up you can name as well. And also politicians.

EnviroServ responds to threats to shut down its Shongweni landfill
EnviroServ has reacted with surprise to an environmental affairs department notice that it intended to suspend operations or close down the company’s landfill site in Shongweni‚ west of Durban.

News of the notice being issued broke on Friday afternoon‚ the day before residents of the outer west area planned a protest march against the company. They claim that the stench from the site was unbearable and that it brought with it a myriad of health problems.

Environmental affairs said investigations were also ongoing into a breach of the site’s operating conditions‚ which could result in charges being laid.

But EnviroServ chief executive Dean Thompson said on Friday evening that the company would defend itself against the notice.

“It is with surprise that we have received notice from the Department of Environmental Affairs [DEA] of intention to suspend or revoke the Shongweni Waste Management Licence. We will motivate fully why this is not necessary given the facts at hand. In the interim we remain a compliant and legal site‚” he said.

Thompson accused the department of having “succumbed to public opinion” and for deviating from the agreed-on remedial action that was being implemented.

“There is no scientific evidence to link EnviroServ to the odour as the DEA-requested technical and toxicology studies are still underway‚” he said.

He added: “The department’s investigation into potential contraventions of legislation is still preliminary and inconclusive. We are liaising with the investigation unit and have agreed timeframes for the submission of outstanding information and representations. This information still needs to be considered before any decisions are made.”

Yes dean... it's a complete surprise that you got the notice. It's not like you've had thousands of people hounding you and the green scorpions on your case and the mountain of evidence proving that your company is doing something wrong either.

Numbnuts, why don't you take people up on their offer and come live in the hillcrest area for a month with your young family to experience what your company is putting everyone through

I'm very disappointed in the city on this front actually.

Limiting the demonstration to 1000 people is just a tactic to try and make it useless. The conspiracy theory part of my mind wonders if this is not to try and protect BEE interests in Enviroserv. The Shongweni site is VERY lucrative for them.
 
Landfill closure could leave toxic waste backlog

Durban – The possible shutdown of Enviroserv's Shongweni landfill facility that treats the hazardous waste of more than 1000 companies could cause a backlog in the disposal of this type of industrial waste in KwaZulu-Natal.

EnviroServ group chief executive Dean Thompson said the controversial Shongweni Landfill managed approximately 70% of the industrial waste produced in Durban and about 50% of the province’s industrial waste.

He said the landfill site did not process waste materials, but rather treated and disposed of them.

“Among the waste streams it accepts are industrial chemicals, condemned foodstuffs, contaminated soils and general household waste. EnviroServ handles about 14 000 tons of waste a month,” Thompson said.

Upper Highway residents have been protesting for months about a strong odour which they allege is emanating from the landfill site and which they claim is impacting their health.

The Department of Environmental Affairs served a notice on Enviroserv last Friday giving the company four days to submit reasons why the department should not revoke or suspend its licence.

This was after the Green Scorpions referred a docket containing the results of associated criminal investigations to the National Prosecuting Authority for a decision on whether to prosecute.

Group commercial director at EnviroServ Dawie Krugel tackled the issue at an environmental forum briefing hosted by the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Thursday.

Well the above says it all , the green scorpions would not be referring a docket to the prosecuting authority if they did not detect criminal behavior by EnviroServ.

Hillcrest is not the only area affected by this. Olifantsfontein, Irene, Randjesfontein, Midstream, Thembisa and Glen Austin have the exact same problem from Interwaste FG landfill in Midrand.

As for Carte Blance, they are not interested in this. We have contacted them about the FG landfill and they did not even reply.

I think the Midrand and Hillcrest groups are getting together on this. People wake up at night with sore eyes, burning throat, coughing, nose bleeds and vomiting when the stench starts.

Stink puts Durban July at risk

Durban - The stench in the upper Highway area may jeopardise South Africa’s richest horse race, the Vodacom Durban July, as racehorses stabled at Summerveld suffer unusual nose bleeds and coughs.

The Comrades Marathon Association has also expressed concern, saying it is monitoring the air pollution ahead of the world’s most popular ultra-marathon in June.

The stench is from the Shongweni landfill site - very close to Summerveld - but the operating company, EnviroServ has denied that it is the sole source.

Residents from Kloof, Dassenhoek, Hillcrest, KwaNdengezi, Shongweni and Assagay say they have complained about the smell for two years but nobody has listened.

Summerveld Estate manager Tony Rivalland said the past two years had been difficult with horses continually coming down with unusual aliments.

“Racehorses suffer from nose bleeds but, of late, horses are suffering from nose bleeds without being involved in strenuous exercise or injuring themselves.

“We’ve had some horses with bleeding noses while they are in a box and those that are coughing are taking longer to shake off the coughs, even on treatment.”

Gold Circle’s racing and marketing executive Graeme Hawkins said they were working with trainers and vets to monitor the situation.

“We may not be able to prove it scientifically but we are worried that the fumes are the cause of the respiratory and haemorrhaging incidents and that this could impact on racing,” he said.

Rivalland said many of the 550 grooms complained of itchy eyes, rashes and sore throats.

“We cannot prove that the fumes are the cause but we strongly believe there is a correlation between the fumes from the site and the symptoms in people and horses.”
