Can't wait to see what Nikon comes up with in their new D4 or D800...

With a f/4 you wont have those additional 5 cross type sensors available to f/2.8.

I have another stupid question about the sensitivity of focus points :/

Isn't the center point usually one of the 2.8?
So with a 4 lens - you're supposed to lose the center point?

It doesn't quite work like that. I may have the subtleties slightly wrong, but basically the regular focus points can only "see" f/5.6 worth of light. The more sensitive focus points can make use of more light.

There have been some great conversations on the dpreview forum by people who actually understand it. I'll go through my bookmarks and see if I can find it.

iirc... On the 1D mk4 all of the sensor points are horizontally line sensitive from f/5.6 to f/8 (nb the new 1Dx only goes to f/5.6 which is a step backwards imo!). As you increase max aperture more of the points add vertical line sensitivity. Hope that makes sense.

New 61-Point High Density Reticular AF

The EOS-1D X includes a brand new 61-Point High Density Reticular AF, the most sophisticated DSLR AF system Canon has ever released. The 21 focusing points in the central area are standard precision cross-type and effective with maximum apertures as small as f/5.6, depending on the lens in use. The center five points are also high-precision diagonal cross-type points for maximum apertures as small as f/2.8. All 61 points are sensitive to horizontal contrast with maximum apertures as small as f/5.6 and 20 of the outer focusing points function as cross-type points with maximum apertures as small as f/4.0. Other innovations of the new 61-point High Density Reticular AF include expanded AF coverage area, superior focusing precision and low light sensitivity, and greater low-contrast subject detection capability compared to earlier EOS AF systems. (See image below for AF point configuration)

According to the Canon press release all 21 middle points are both vert and horiz cross type (at f/5.6) but the 5 middle are diagonal cross type at f/2.8 as well. I think this is a step forward. How many EOS bodies have diagonal cross type auto focus points?

All from the xxD up [1] have a horizontal, vertical and diagonal on the center point.

[1] "up" does not include the 5D series. They're lower level cameras as far as features, and in particular autofocus go.

It's so.. beautiful... Any estimates at the retail price?

I love my Pentax K100D Super (probably the worst camera of any poster to this thread), but I'm still a student. By the time I'm in the market for toys like this, 'cameras' in the traditional sense could be obsolete :/

Ah, I see what you are complaining about now. It would seem that Canon has indeed made a blunder with leaving out any f/8 focus points, all the wildlife photographers are bitching big time. One response received from a Canon rep was "Just buy longer lenses!" Nice attitude not to mention longer glass often means more weight. Unless Canon is about to produce a whole bunch of lenses like the new 200-400L with 1,4 converter built in.

Why do you say that? 18MP isn't that high anymore. You seen what resolution Hasselblad cameras shoot at?

Remember a Hasselblad is a medium format camera it's sensor is a lot larger than your normal aps-c sensor, the 50mp sensor is double the size of these full frame sensors.
