EOS 350D ... any good?

@Mercurial, before you buy that Extreme IV card, have a look at this. I decided to get one 4GB Sandisk Extreme III card to benchmark (since I have a II and a IV already) before I stock up for my trip, and the results were interesting. I also decided to look up the price (amazon.co.uk) and add it as a cost per performance figure:

At a mere 3.33 MB/s difference (20% odd) for roughly double the money, the Sandisk Extreme III looks like the best bang for buck by far. I'm off to order three more :)

@koffie - thank for this info man. I was going to stock up on some CF cards this weekend. If this is true then I will definitely go for the Sandisk Extreme III.

What kind of card reader are you using?

Nope. I just copy 4/8GB worth of CFR2 files to it, stick it in the camera, format it, wash/rinse/repeat...
I'm not looking for benchmarking (the initial transfer is hardly the slowest link in my chain) but something that might indicate the 'health' of the card - anything that might be a precursor to a card failure.

Well, my cycle should - it write faster to the card than my camera does (from what I can tell), and for longer periods of time on end. And with a bit of shell scripting I can make it happen automatically in the background. I can even intensify it - copy, sync, checksum, delete, sync, repeat repeat repeat...

Not really sure that would be a great idea. Steve Gibson - creator of spinrite - was asked if his application could be used on flash memory and he said the intensity of the read/write would quickly destroy it.

Thanks so much for this :)

I'm pretty sure the 40D takes CF - he also has a sony point and shoot hence the Sony Memorystick.

I could be mistaken though.

Yeah. I just assumed that since he addressed me in the post that it was for SD. Indeed, the 40D does take CF.

so . . . got a camera yet? :D

Lol, as I mentioned, I'm off to Durbs in a few days time, so I did not want to get the cam now, as I would not have time to play around with it. When I get back, I will get it, so that's in a few weeks time :)
