Hey guys,

I recently purchased my new Canon 500D with a EF-S 18-200mm IS Lens. Loving every moment I use my new baby... but now I want to move into Wedding Photography a bit, which brings me to my question: What lenses would you guys recommend for the task at hand? From poking around these forums a bit I have noticed that guys like Bwana are quite keen on the Canon 50mm f1.8 lens, I am seriously concidering adding this to my collection.

Also any recommendations on some decent yet reasonably priced Flash units? I've been sniffing around on E-Bay and there seems to be a third party flash unit with a 0.1 to 0.5 sec recovery time for under $100. The Canon Speedlite's are awesome, but extremely expensive. Cheapest Canon SpeedLite 430 EX MkII that I can find is R3077...

Looking forward to sharing the photography section of the forum with you guys :)

Thanks in advance for everyone's input.

Regards,
X

I'm keener on the 50mm f/1.4 :)

I'm also really, really, (one mo time) really keen on the 24-70 f/2.8 for weddings.

I've been using a sigma flash for the past few years and its been great. However, just yesterday I caved and sent my mum to the shop for a Speedlite (580EX).

Is the 50mm f/1.8 worth getting though? Can pick it up brand new for about 1k. Also when you say 24-70 f/2.8 ... would the Sigma be any good?

The 1.8 is definitely worth the money.

One of the sigma's is better than the other but you wont regret getting the HSM model.

Also another great lens for weddings is the 70-200mm 2.8 but yes that lens also comes with a hefty price tag.

Not to mention the weight, the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS mk I weighs 1490g according to Canon's website, a lot more than his 18-200's 595g. That's a lot of weight to carry around during an entire wedding. Regardless, I'd love to have one of the 70-200s :D

What made you go for the Canon 580EX? Was the 500 Super lacking something that the 580EX has?

would the 500D be concidered a small sensor body or a full frame body?

It's a crop sensor.

Structural integrity - my Sigma is held together with electrical tape.

70-200 has its uses but on a second body.

Bwana,

Which one of these 24-70's did you buy?

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF
or
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM

Is there really a difference between the two except for the one having a more silent motor? Also where would you recommend purchasing this unit from? Oh and lastly, what about the previous version of these lenses... the ones without the DF, are they to be avoided?

Thanks

I got the HSM model. The HSM motor is silent and fast and in terms of image quality the reviews tended to favour it over the other one.

I'd avoid the discontinued models.

Edit - I'd also consider getting the battery grip too - it is a beast of a lens.
