So a mate of mine suffers from really bad back pain. His bones are actually completely fscked, he is being held together by metal.

Lately it’s been getting worse and worse and I think it may be due to how he is sitting at his desk. He works remotely and works very long hours.

Can anyone recommend an ergonomic office chair?

Would say Herman Miller Aeron but it seems they're not exactly available in SA anymore, unfortunately. Keen to hear about some other options as well.

Off topic. Can he exercise and at least do regular stretches?
I suffered from debilitating back pain for almost a year till I discovered what shortening of the ligaments from proplonged sitting does to you. A Biokinetecist might be able to help.

That’s just it. He cannot exercise at all. The doctors said he can’t even have massages because it could mess him up even more.

He’s had a hip replacement and had surgery for something else. He’s suffered for years.

aeron is crap

Look at Geocloud. Step Ahead with the headrest is really good.

Herman Miller is really just a brand but its chairs are uncomfortable as hell.

We had a similar colleague that had issues, but their car seat is folded almost flat onto the back seat. So it made it worse. Best is to send them to a doctor dealing in Ergonomics.

They tried a few chairs and then eventually we liked the Geocloud Step Ahead chair. We have since replaced all our company chairs for those. It's about R3500-4000 per chair.

They are a local company. Great to deal with. Do desking too.

For monitors however we didnt like the monitor brackets. Didnt get from them but from another supplier before. Tossed all the brackets and went for the Dell P series Monitors ie P2417H and P2717h. Can swivel, tilt 90 degrees and raise up and down. Since then we have also switched to only those. No need for the brackets thats difficult to move around.

You can also look at getting an ergonomic footrest. Some like it, especially if they are short.

Lastly Orico sells nice big mouse pads. Works well. For keyboards we did like Microsoft Ergonomic but most prefer the plain cheap HP (or Dell) Slimline keyboards and then we use Logitech Cordless Mice.

The biggish mousepad offers wrist protection.

Picked up a Herman Miller SAYL for my wife for R4k a few weeks ago. Refurb from all office. Chair is like new. And to add - now me and the mrs have matching chairs... funny thing is the refurb chair is in better nick than mine - which is 8-9yrs old!
