As far as functional languages go it is one of the best. But yeah the syntax is not desirable at all.

Erlang is used in telecoms, designed primarily for writing code that runs in a telephone exchange.

A few companies in South Africa are using it for telecoms applications(USSD backends, prepaid airtime, Mpesa type services). I think another company is using it for credit card processing(can't remeber thier name).
