i dont understand.. i arrive at my new place yesterday and plug my router in and check my statistics, and it says downstream 4meg.. today i check again and its 1.7meg... why do telkom think they can get away with limiting 4 meg lines, while customers are paying for them?

any responses will be appreciated?

1.7mb - thats a weird figure.

sounds like either a faulty line - or the distance from the exchange is 2 far away.

yes photonman, we consumers do understand this, however this has happened to me before. I lived with 4mbit for years until 1 day, my router synced at only 1/4 of this figure. I lodged numerous complaints to Telkom and dispute me telling them that I had 4mbit for 2 years prior to this degradation, they insisted that my line is not capable and that it's an up to 4mbit service. I had to take the complaint to hellopeter for upper management's eyes before they actually did something their side and I re-synced at my fully capable speed of 4mbit.

It could be that the local Telkom tech was worked on the Distribution box and you have a back (dry) connection! that would increase line resistance = lower sync rate.

yea u can only really complain if ur speed is below 1mb. if ure expecting 4mb speeds all the time then u didn't read the fine print :P

I don't think there's any legal dispute here since we all know that they only have to provide a service of "up to 4mbit". The issue is that he synced at 4mbit and his line is therefore capable of syncing at full speed, and now he is unable to sync at his maximum capable speed.

its strange though, becos the line speed downstream is constantly changing, last nite it was 1.7, this morning 1.9, now its 2.1, but this is happening with out rebooting the router, its synced and changing?

the one telephone in the house isnt filtered (but from experience, only using the phone causes the dsl line problems, if the phone is untouched it wont), but the telephone is also linked to the front gate, and is used to open the gate, could this cause any problems? (without the phone being picked up that is)

Yes, like ic mentioned once. If you've got things connected to your telephone line like alarm systems etc. it has to pass through a filter like your phones.

So it could cause it, yes ;)

ok im now officially down to 1024 and stable at 1024... so basically they've limited my 4 meg line because they think they can get away with it...

Sucks man ;)

Make sure you make a nuisance of yourself :p

had a techie come over today for my log about the line not syncing at 4 meg, LOL... so he walks in and i ask him about that, and he tells me to phone my ISP (lol)ok, then he changes every connection in the house, and tells me there is no noise whatsoever on the line, its the handsets that are screwed..

my SNR is 18.5db

so then i ask him which exchange im on, and how far is it, he says sunninghill not even a km away yet my attenuation is 57db

now comparing those figures to figures made in previous posts about good and bad, mine are pretty bad... but my line still synced at 4 meg for a day and a half... before it was changed....

so basically the line has got noise, and its not perfect, and also obviously telkom are limiting connections down... but even a techie couldnt pick up what the router did?

Be grateful for 1.7mb

My 4mbit line is currently syncing at 1024k, effectively giving me a 1mb line. Odd, though, considering I have had perfect sync at 4096 since I upgraded a year ago and neither my house nor the exchange has moved...

kasyx, im now down to 1024 aswell mate:< i also had a perfect 4 meg sync, and perfect download speeds... something has gone desperately wrong

Well I seem to have sorted my problem out. I called Telkom, and after the mandatory hour-long hold, was lucky enough to get someone who knew their elbow from their ADSL. I told him my problem, he tested my line, asked me what my line should be syncing at to which I replied "4096/384", and he set it on their side and hey presto my line is back to normal. At least so far...

Although my SNR is lower and my line attenuation is higher
Either Telkom are systematically moving their exchanges around or there is something wrong with their lines altogether...
