On 2007.11.05 at 18:35 My adsl connection dropped, but did not reconnect. I usually use a netgear modem in bridge mode. Currently I cannot make a pppoe connection, altought the modem web interface gives the status as "connected" and shows the correct 384/128 speeds. I have a SAIX, Verizon and IS account, all three hasn't reached their cap yet, but all gives the following errors on connecting:

When using the router in router mode, and connect with the router I get the followng output:
Connecting to Server: Disconnect
Negotiation: Initialize LCP
Authontication: ---
Getting IP Addresses: ---
Getting Network Mask: ---

When using the router in bridge mode, and connecting with windows I get the following output:
Error 678: The remote computer did not respond.

When using the router in bridge mode, and connecting with linux I the following error:
The Access Concentrator of your provider did not respond. Please check
your network and modem cables.

---- My telkom experience:

The first guy was very helpful, he 'reconfigured the ports', and told me that if I still get the same error after I reset my modem, then I must phone back to report the line as faulty.

I needed to get a new modem for my parent's anyway, so I plugged that in, and it didn't change anything. Also changed telephone cables and splitters and filters.

I did have to set the VPI to 8, and VCI to 35, like the first guy told me.

So I phoned again, and the second guy didn't want to report the line as faulty, as it is working on his monitor. He also 'reconfigured the ports', advised me to go to the telkom website. EVEN after I tell him that there is no pppoe connection. I explained to him clearly that the modem says connected, the green light goes on, but no pppoe connection can be made. Still he wants me to go to the telkom website. Fine. Big surprise, "server not found". I fight the urge not to be sarcastic, because I need his help to get this working again.

At this point I was wondering if the splitter isn't causing the problem. After explaining to the guy that I want to remove the splitter and just connect the adsl modem directly, he doesn't believe that we should say goodbye, because he believes the phone will still magically work. After explaining it to him again, we said goodbye. After inspection I see that the splitter is hard wired (it was done by telkom), so I didn't feel like removing it.

I did try to dial again, without the phone connected at all. Still no luck.
Connected the phone back. (it does has the appropriate filter btw).

Phoned telkom again, and line is finally reported as faulty.

Same problem, same error, also down at 6pm on 5 Nov. Still down. Logged fault with tkom too. Clearly if we both went down at the same time problem could be related. Where are you? Parow here. Please post time you're up again and reason for fault.

I'm in Stellenbosch.

Another buddy of mine, has 3 or more adsl lines in different places here in Stellenbosch. One of his lines, also went down at the same time. Because he is out of town for the next few weeks he cannot confirm if it is exactly the same problem.

On the other hand, he isn't in control of his own router, because he is using an uncapped IS connection. The IS guys does all the configuring on their end. Last I heard, they couldn't explain what the fault is.

I'll post any updates here, as it comes in. Apparently telkom can take up to a week to come out to fix a problem :-(

I have been on adsl for more than a year, and this is the first time something like this happened.

Same here, I've never been disconnected for more than a few minutes. First time I can't connect at all and we're close to 48 hours now... not good. You don't realise how dependent you are on internet access until you don't have it!

Alpha_Geek in Stellebosch has the same issue as well:

I'll also post updates once my situation changes.

i have that EXACT problem here in Century City, for the past month a few times a week usually in the afternoon it drops and i can't connect for up to an hour. (the adsl led on the router says its on though)

today was the most frustrating of all, it dropped at 9am-10am, then at around 12pm for a half hour, and now around 2pm-3pm.

i don't know what could be causing this i was thinking of replacing my router thank goodness i found this thread, i tried to phone telkom today waited 1/2 hour to speak to some guy who was going to "refresh" the ports. but we somehow got disconnected and i didn't feel like phoning again.

in the past by the time it went on again i was usually still on hold.

i wonder if this is a line issue or some sort of issue on telkoms side? i mean we are all in different areas.
