If the standard of coal being supplied by mines to Eskom does not improve, government will invoke special powers to force them to do this

Obviously the guavamint has heavily invested in a time machine. This will allow them to go back 60 million years and plant the right kind of forest to ensure the mines today have the correct form of coal.


Please, before I lose it altogether today - some one explain in simple words how a coal mine that has "the wrong sort of coal" can suddenly get "the right sort"?

I saw yet another comment on the fact that the coal is wet.

Its called a roof fscktard! They have been around quite a while now, I suggest you look it up on Google.

Its government policy. It can fix anything. Just like it fixed Telkom to provide us all with better and cheaper telecoms, just like it fixed allowing criminals to serve in parliament and government, just like it fixed crime.
 
I can appreciate coal dumps must be huge. A "roof" in the normal sense of the word may be a tough call.
But, on the other hand, it is probably smaller than a stadium to construct.....
 
Those in the know, should be able to come up with something. I mean, there's coal all in various countries in the world. They should have a better way of doing things than south africa.

Ask China - I seem to have read somewhere that they use coal.

Power plants are designed to cope with specific types of coal during the burning process. I think its “D” grade coal but I might be mistaken because its been a while since I been in coal mine.

Coal therefore needs to be cleaned (washing plant at a mine) to reduce the ash content of coal and substances such as sodium, inorganic sulphur etc. Quality has effect on:

-Efficiency of electricity generation
-Maintenance and operation of power plant
-Amount of waste that has to be taken care of at the plant

Fair enough - however, I suspect they neither have the capacity left to do that, nor the time.
Coal is being pulled out at the speed it is being used, probably.

What Irwin says is old news!

We have the best methods but we not implementing them properly perhaps!

Export coal prices are so high that mines are probably putting lots of resources on efficiencies of coal going to Richards Bay than Eskom.

I remember, reading findings of a Coaltech 2020 research project on work at a certain Eskom’s Power Station. It showed that significant efficiency gains can be achieved if the "bandwidth" of the quality of coal being sent to a boiler can be minimised.

The “bandwidth” is the amount of variance in the quality of the “D” grade coal sent to power station. The implication of this is that a boiler can be fine-tuned for a particular coal, and does not need to be set up to handle large variations in quality.
