Smartvillage is the worst! I'm trying to find out if I can switch to a different service provider.

Apparently they've recently opened their fibre to the home network to other ISPs, but I havent been able to get a straight answer on this. Has anyone in Century City (bougain villas) been able to switch to a different ISP? Did you first have to get a Telkom line installed?
Thanks in advance for any help!

1) what dafuque is Smartvillage?

2) you have fiber to the home? Fibre. To. The. Fricking. Home??? Why haven't I heard of that option yet. Must've been enourmously expensive.

3) afaik we live in a free market, no? So a switch to any ISP of your choice should be possible.

4.a) a Telkom line is the basis for every ADSL internet connectivity in South Africa. You may decide to let your ISP manage that Telkom line for you though.

4.b) if you are really on a domestic FIBRE connection stop commplaining about the wondrous company which supplied that to you, enjoy and keep silent.

Fibre with a 3gig cap isn't internet.

I live in the area and using Amobia (Fibre).

Smatvillage is a ISP that installs FTTH to the large eco estates. You can get voice services, Dstv through fibre and if im not mistaken home automation.

That actually sounds pretty cool. Curious why the OP wants to move away from them?

Their service is good... But only when it's not down, and in my experience was quite a lot.

The problem is both price and service - I'm currently paying R900pm for an unreliable 4mbps uncapped line.

The uncapped lines are heavily shaped (I think from around 20gb), so it seems like they are trying to encourage people to use the unshaped capped lines, but I'm not too keen on that. R550pm buys you 10gb on a 4mbps line from Smartvillage, but I'd prefer to switch to Mweb and pay R600pm for 4mbps uncapped (including the telkom line rental). A year ago I know we were locked in with Smartvillage, but I think we might be able to switch now, that's what I'm trying to find out. The problem is that Smartvillage owns the last bit of infrastructure to my house, so afaik they have say over what ISP you can use.

The other part of the problem is that we've had very frequent downtime, which is just getting very annoying. I think this is mostly a problem with the local infrastructure, so switching to a different ISP may or may not help (I'm willing to try though).

Anyway - I'm still looking for someone in Century City who has successfully switched!

(Side note: apparently you can get up to 40mbps lines from Smartvillage, but they don't have the prices on the pricelist. It's definitely way more than R1000pm. They advertise FFTH as a major feature, but I really don't see how it offers me any benefit.)

"We sorry to inform you that the service is down"

"We glad to inform you the service is up"

"We sorry to inform you that the service is down"

"We glad to inform you the service is up"

"We sorry to inform you that the service is down"

"We glad to inform you the service is up"

and so on...

OMG, my cousin is moving into their new place later this year. She isn't going to be happy if this is the kind of service as she is moving from 3G/Edge speeds (she don't like Telkom so never installed phone line since going to JHB) and then to this doesn't sound pleasant. Eish!

This is the by the new Waterfall Equestrian place that has just come up. :(

Keep us updated as i would like to forward her the info once we know for sure. :)

Hi,

A little bit of advice is required here please :)

The Smart Village guy was finally here on Tuesday for a site survey.
Apparently the line is already in the house since my intercom had already been installed the previous week.

I asked for an extra point in the house so that I can have a better choice of where to put either the phone or the router.

The extra point is a luxury, so I can leave it for now.

I fell backwards when I got the quote from Smart Village today:

Additional point: R830
Routerboard (non-wireless): R555
Setup and Configuration:R650
Consumables:R57
Total: R2092

As I said, I can drop the additional line.
Do I have to take their modem? Can I not use my existing TP-Link router? TL-MR3420, its got a WAN port, 4 LAN, and wireless and 3G USB port.
I don't know if SmartVilage connection in the house is fibre? So not sure if a special Router is required if my existing router is not sufficient?

Then other thing: I am an IT person myself, so the R650 for Setup and Configuration is insane. I am sure I can manage on my own. Will they allow it and can I insist on self-setup?

Looking forward to hear your recommendations!

Regards,
H
