The tuna thread reminded me of something :erm:

Anyone else eaten this? If you have, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about :o :erm:

I've used up my googles for the month so I can't find out what it is.

That's over a google a day

It's a type of fish. You'll probably find it there, I had it in Durban. It was called butterfish on the menu though.

oh I have had butterfish before it was abzolutely DELICIOUS!!!

It was. No, erm, side effects for you then?

Nope. It's possible (probable?) it may have been another fish though.

It was the fish of the day at PLAKA (greek restaurant), and was a whole fish that they grilled over coals. They said it was butterfish and it looked like the one on the wiki, just quite small around 25cm.

I google;
The Japanese and Italian governments have banned the importation and sale of escolar for these reasons. The governments of Canada, Sweden and Denmark require that all escolar come with warning labels. The FDA lifted the escolar ban in 1992 because the fish is nontoxic - sure, it causes embarrassing things to happen in your pants, but it won't hurt or kill you.

In spite of all this, escolar is indeed very buttery and delicious, and should be enjoyed, but never in portions larger than six ounces. Portions below six ounces will not cause gastrointestinal distress. Don't say we didn't warn you.

My sister had butterfish once and said it was very nice...but the next day she suffered the consequences thereof. Said she had never in her life experienced something like it. There was a TV program after this episode of hers where they were talkign about fish species that should not be consumed due to them being on the endagngered list etc. Butterfish came up for some reason...and the guy said that even though there is no worries about it becomming endangered...it is not suitable for human consumption really. I guess it is because of the erm...side effects that it has lol.

Oh yes, anal leakage. The Horror!!!

Love butterfish. Hate the side-effects though, which I've experienced twice, so tend to avoid it. It is no fun...

To be frankly and bluntly specific - and I'm sorry for this - consumption of escolar causes explosive, oily, orange diarrhea. People have reported that the discharges are often difficult to control and accidents can happen while passing gas. I personally know someone who ate an escolar steak one night, unaware of its side effects. The next day he was riding the elevator to his office when out of nowhere his bowels unleashed a surprise attack on his pants. As he said later, "Thank God I had my gym bag with me, which had a clean pair of underwear in it." This explains why escolar is also called the "olestra fish" and the "ex-lax fish."

:D

I had this again a week or two ago for the first time in quite a while and wow, incredibly tasty. Fish4Africa in Montevista, Goodwood had stacks of the stuff on their fresh fish counter so I couldn't resist. I had it as part of a platter so did not eat more than the recommended 120g or so. Zero side effects luckily.

Ha ha ha, I had some last year and errr, soiled my pants in the middle of a guided tour the next day.

Hmm, I imagined other embarrasing things happening in my pants.

/leaves terribly disapointed in butterfish..

No, this fish does not cause you to uncontrollably jizz in your pants.

But really, it is very tasty as far as fish go. Just dont make a full meal of it.

"escolar" means school or "to school/teach"
So I assume you have learnt your lesson :p
