Eskom’s nuclear war

Eskom is at war with French contractor Framatome following several serious and costly blunders which delayed the critical Koeberg life extension project.

Civil war has barely started and now we are already going nuclear?

Jesus, but things are just going from bad to worse here in SA....

You'd think the article would get the facts right.

4th paragraph states incorrectly I might add:

The steam generator replacement on Unit 1 was initially supposed to occur between February and June 2021. The replacement of Unit 2 was set to occur between January and May 2022.

Nope, that was supposed to happen in 2018 actually. Why is that such an important point to make?

Well, Westinghouse took Eskom to court over the awarding of the replacemement and the date was given as the reason, as Eskom absolutely insisted it had to be done then, and Eskom also said we're already started, and we absolutely must meet that deadline. Which they didn't meet. Ergo obviously horseshit reasoning as we can all see.

The generators can only be replaced during a scheduled shut down in the course of routine maintenance that takes place every 18 months. Eskom intended that the installation and replacement of the steam generators should occur during such a shut down in 2018.

It should be noted that Eskom and Areva did in fact enter into the envisaged contract and the work is proceeding. Eskom maintains that the work must be completed by 2018, when there will be a planned shutdown of the Koeberg plant in stages, and the steam generators would then be replaced. None of the parties deny that the replacement of the generators is vital to the country’s power grid and that the energy crisis that affects it will be greatly exacerbated if the work for which Westinghouse and Areva tendered is not done urgently

As everyone knows the actual reason for the awarding of Areva vs the cheaper *and* less risky Westinghouse was Mr Koko and Mr C Matjila getting fat envelopes of cash in the process.

If only the apartheid Government had not built this, things would have been better off.
