Eskom 9.5% tariff increase..

Eskom - wanted a 20.5% tariff increase from 01 Apr. They were awarded a 9.5% increase effective 01Apr . The shameless audacity of Eskom pushing for a 20.5% tariff increase, they
I'm guessing you didn't mean to put Telkom in the title? If that's the case report the post and someone will change it.

Edit - I'm just going to go ahead and change that anyway. I don't want to distract you from finishing what you were going to say. ;)

Hi...sorry , I wasn't thinking shouldn't have named them .. caught up in the frustration +the pertanence of it all
Thanks for clearing it up.Gaz

Blame the ANC

Eskom is being pushed to use Diesel by the ANC
They can't fire their staff (and apparently over 5000 are being investigated for fraud).
Muni's aren't paying and not much can be done again - ANC influence.
Eskom needs to shut down generation to server - told not to, and to keep it running - ANC influence.
Anything the ANC touches is fraudulent/corrupt - Coal sales to Eskom, Diesel Sales to Eskom, Equipment Sales to Eskom... noticing a pattern?

When Eskom board point this out, the IFP (acting for the ANC) act all shocked.

If politics is causing costs, time to remove the politics from the situation.

If Eskom had a free hand to do what was needed things might be different.

All pointed out by Busisiwe Mavuso previously - https://www.timeslive.co.za/politic...erference-says-there-should-be-load-shedding/

Or more infamously recently at Scopa, where the chairman was completely out of order.

We should all be sending them letters of demand for the costs (personal inconvenience, stress, batteries, inverters, generators, solar panels/ installations, loss of business revenue, the list continues ad infinitum ...) incurred due to the havoc load shedding has caused to the country and its citizens personally over the last 15 years.

Bloody cheek to ask for any increase.

Wandering down Eskom lane over the years - well - its frikken circus.
One thing most South Africans share is anxiety about the electricity supply this winter. Maintenance of the infrastructure, particularly generators, cannot be delayed any longer. (2013)

CEOs have come and gone. Cyril Ramaphosa was given the reigns in 2015, and was going to sort it all out.
Consider, - from 1985 to 2005 - 20 years, Eskom had 3 CEOs.
From 2005 to 2022 - 17 years its had 6 no wait 10 no wait ...... 14 CEOs.

Consider, that the estimated loss to the economy by 2015, from 7 years prior was ZAR400Bn - about the same amount the Guptas siphoned off, not taking NPV into account.
Thanks to Eskom’s ongoing troubles, we can now put a number to the cost of the SA Government’s centralised Command and Control economic policies. The ANC’s “Developmental State” ideology, where in true Soviet style the bureaucrats believe they know better than the market, has in a couple decades turned electricity utility Eskom from globally admired to dysfunctional. According to the Bloomberg report below, if there had been no electricity shortages in the past seven years, the SA economy would have been a tenth bigger. With GDP at $350bn economy (R4trn) that translates into a staggering R400bn that has been foregone. That’s hundreds of thousands of lost jobs. The power of compounding also works on the downside. – Alec Hogg

None the less, in 2015 CR17 was inserted into the equation. And, the bullshido champ started spewing his stories.

Cape Town
– Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa says there will be light at the end of the tunnel for power utility Eskom.
“It is now committed to carrying out more than the required planned preventative maintenance to ensure that the condition of the generating plants keep on improving,” he said.

That promise was made yours truly 7 years ago. (I should add, he still hasn't found his spine. Maybe it will turn up one day?)

June last year CR17 was singing this song .............
“Cynical though some among us may be, let the progress we are making in overcoming the immediate crisis motivate us to do even better. Throughout the course of our history we have had setbacks and false starts. But our resilient nature allowed us to weather many storms. Let us nurture the green shoots of progress.” | Cyril Ramaphosa

And lets not forget the ret ard faction - COSATUs contribution
Cosatu on Wednesday vowed to fight “to the bitter end” any attempts to privatise Eskom.

Like most things, the ANC has sung the same tune for years. Things haven't really got any better.

I would wager, that next year, in fact in a decades time, we will be saying the same old same old, and not much would have changed, other than things would be just way more expensive as we pay for sheeples error of supporting their liberation retards.

9,5%? I don't care. Many things went up more in recent years. Our total electricity bill pm equals our diesel cost for the cars. R1.500 ea. If I compare that to grocery bill and school fees (yours, combined R15.000 pm?), electricity is a bargain. Even eating out for four is close to R1.500 - one month of electricity. Financing your car, R6.000 pm? Mine is 20 years old, paid for.

Join a gym. Shower there. Saves R100s pm. Hot water from a 200l geyser, once fashionable, came of age.

- Industry should be able to bargain lower prices to remain(?) competitive.

And as said above, it's NOT Eskom's shortcoming. It's the ANC. But let's just give them another chance. Perhaps 28 more years?

I can't believe no one is protesting this and taking eskom and nersa to court.

They have gotten tariff increases above inflation rate for past few years. Yet we have gotten worse service from them over the years. (loadshedding)
