Eskom breaks ground at first battery storage site

Eskom, in partnership with Hyosung Heavy Industries, has started construction for its first energy storage facility under the power utility's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project.

The utility said construction of the facility, located within the Msunduzi and Impendle municipalities in KZN, will take seven to twelve months.
 
All Phase 1 sites are planned to be commissioned by 30 June 2023 and Phase 2 by December 2024.
So we can expect it to take a decade or 2 extra and operate at under 50%. Until it's stolen.

That is a good point. We have no excess to store. Hence our issue. :ROFL:
 
Eskom is going to start providing DC in the near future. Y'all have to buy new appliances, and the DC will be unstable, your next door neighbour will turn on his stove and your TV will go dim.

Don't worry too much, the TV might be stolen before that happens - think solutions, not problems.

They do have excess at certain times. The problem we are facing now is peak usage.

Last I checked it was loadshedding all day at the same level. I imagine they have issues at this point even at off-peak.

On another note: surely pumped storage schemes are a more efficient option than batteries?

Probably, but I reckon the more backup we have the better.

What is the cost per kWh? The maths in my head is either wrong or the taxpayer is getting shafted again.
