Eskom build programme on track says Minister

Eskom has spent over R75.5 billion on the capital investment programme since 2005, and delivered 5031 Megawatt (MW) of new electricity generating capacity into the system, Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele said on Tuesday.

Shame that the World Bank loan has to be used for wind and solar - a waste of money if there ever was one. Even if they do get 100MW each (a stretch), nameplate capacities for wind and solar are misleading because their capacity factors are so poor, so in fact we'll be getting effectively about 20-30MW out of each farm.

Yep. And when the wind and solar runs out we can still use the perpetual supply of oil and coal.

The only electricity generation capacity worth investing in is nuclear, and hydroelectric where available.

But coal is preferable to wind / solar right now, especially for us.

I am all for nuclear power, but where I have my doubts is putting too many nuclear power stations up here, and in Africa. The various governments must realise that you don't play around with nuclear power, and put your buddies in charge because they are your buddies, rather than properly trained and qualified experts.
