Major industrial customers were urged to reduce electricity consumption by at least 10 percent on Thursday as Eskom declared a power emergency.

"The power system is severely constrained today due to the loss of additional generating units from our power station fleet, reduced imports, and the extensive use of emergency reserves," Eskom said in a statement.

This forced Eskom to declare an emergency, in accordance with its regulatory protocols, to protect the national power grid.

Eskom published load shedding schedules for its direct customers on its website, but said these were only "a precautionary measure".

"While we will make every effort to avoid load shedding, we are hopeful that by applying these measures, coupled with support from all electricity consumers, we will achieve the required load reduction necessary to protect the national grid."

The state of emergency would remain in place until 9pm, when the situation would be reviewed.

"We have alerted our key industrial customers and have required them to reduce their load by a minimum of 10 percent as from 2pm [on Thursday]."

Shopping centres and retail outlets were asked to switch off geysers and adjust airconditioning to 23 degrees Celsius to help reduce demand.

"As workers leave office buildings this evening, we ask that they please switch off lights with the exception of the security lighting, and avoid leaving on air-conditioning overnight."

Residential customers were asked to switch off geysers, airconditioners, lights and non-essential appliances between 5pm and 9pm.

Wonder if this has anything to do with my electricity being off today at home.
It went off around 8am and was still off at 12:00..

I'm in Door De Kraal, Bellville

Eskom declares an emergency, SAA is asking for another financial bailout, the SABC is farked..... what next....

We had frequent power outs in the mid mornings during the past two weeks in our area. Now I know why!

Would it not be good for Sa to have power outages a week before 7 May .just to remind everybody what lying incompetent government the ANC is.Imagine Thuli report showing Zuma was corrupt and power failures a week before elections.ANC chickens coming home to roost

So who in Eskom's top management team will fall on their sword for this disaster?

Poor Strategic planning.
Poor Procurement planning.
Poor Network planning.
Poor Leadership.

Lack of oversight.
Lack of accountability.
Lack of responsibility.

Fscking pathetic.

Too much govt interference. Too much fiddling at the new power station site, which is R30bn over budget and over a year late. Wait until it is powered up and there is an accident

ESKOM POWER EMERGENCY LIFTED

Eskom has lifted its power emergency declaration as pressure on the system eased slightly, it said on Friday.

"The power emergency was lifted at around 9pm [on Thursday] but the system is still in a vulnerable state," said Eskom spokesman Andrew Etzinger on Friday.

Eskom declared the power emergency on Thursday afternoon, urging major industrial customers to reduce electricity consumption by at least 10 percent.

"The power system is severely constrained today due to the loss of additional generating units from our power station fleet, reduced imports, and the extensive use of emergency reserves," Eskom said in a statement at the time.

The emergency was declared in accordance with its regulatory protocols to protect the national power grid.

Beside the call to industrial customers, shopping centres and retail outlets were asked to switch off geysers and adjust airconditioning to 23 degrees Celsius to help reduce demand.

Office workers were asked to switch off all lights and air conditioning and just keep security lighting on.

Residential customers were asked to switch off geysers, airconditioners, lights and non-essential appliances between 5pm and 9pm.

Eskom diverts power to Botswana during 'emergency'

No doubt that the comrades are still supplying free power to Bob up north.

Eskom diverts power to Botswana during 'emergency'

Reports claim Eskom is diverting electricity to Botswana while South Africans face rolling blackouts and appeals to reduce power consumption.

Botswana is facing a supply crisis after two units at its only major power plant, Morupule, were shut down in the past year when their boilers malfunctioned. This halved the plant's output and forced Eskom to keep the country running, the Sunday Times reported.

"It is a serious problem but fortunately we have our region partners, such as Eskom, with whom we have a good relationship," Botswana Power Corporation spokesperson Spencer Moreri was quoted as saying.

Morupule was designed to generate 600MW of the total peak need of 680MW but could only deliver 300MW. Eskom supplied 90% of the shortfall.

Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger told the newspaper that Eskom expected Botswana to be self-sufficient but because of technical glitches, it supplied the country with a third of Morupule's previous capacity.

"But that would be reduced to zero in the event South Africa was subjected to rotational load-shedding," Etzinger was quoted as saying.

"Without supply from Eskom, Botswana would have had almost no electricity available with significant harm resulting for that economy and for that of the region."

Eskom supplies electricity to neighbouring countries like Namibia, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Lesotho.

Keeping the country's lights on
On Thursday, Eskom declared an emergency to keep the country's lights on.

It requested large industrial consumers to reduce their electricity consumption by 10% until 9pm on Thursday night, Etzinger had told the Mail & Guardian.

As of Thursday morning, four generating units developed "technical problems", he said, leaving the security of supply vulnerable.

The company's call follows a similar emergency that was declared in November last year. The loss of a transmission line from Cahora Bassa, in Mozambique contributed to the shortage in supply.

Etzinger said Eskom had teams on their way to the site and it expected the power to be restored by the weekend "at the latest".

In a statement released just after the emergency kicked in at 2pm, Eskom said it would make every effort to avoid a blackout.

"We are hopeful that by applying these measures, coupled with support from all electricity consumers, we will achieve the required load reduction necessary to protect the national grid," it said.

The loss of productive capacity has been a major frustration for industry across the country.

The country's power grid has been operating on very thin margins as Eskom performs required regulatory maintenance on its power stations over the summer months, and works to build new power stations to meet demand.

The completion of the new Medupi and Kusile power plants has, however, been repeatedly delayed over a number of years. The first 600MW unit of Medupi is only expected to come on line at the end of this year.
