Apologies about the long post.
I'm looking for some input from other forumites. I live in a complex with around 50 flats in Johannesburg - we are not on the City Power grid but rather get power directly from Eskom. We have one meter that gets read by Eskom for which we get billed monthly. Each unit is individually metered within the complex (Eskom never sees these meters). In order to arrive at a R/kWh cost we take the total Eskom bill divided by kWh used and multiply that by each unit's metered consumption. The total for the metered recoveries will be lower than the total Eskom bill due to electricity usage on common property which is paid out of general levies.
Eskom charges a lot higher in the winter months (June, July & August). For example, our Eskom bills for May to July this year was:
May 2023: R79 727.16 / 22 568 kWh = R3.23 / kWh
June 2023: R134 689.97 / 30 057 kWh = R4.48 / kWh
July 2023: R140 259.35 / 27 841 kWh = R5.04 / kWh
We are currently on a tariff structure called Nightsave Small with Eskom. Does anybody know what other tariff structures there are available within Eskom for us to potentially use? The R5.04 / kWh is just hugely out of line with what non-complex Eskom direct households or households on City Power get charged. I've attached extracts from our monthly Eskom bills for May to July below which shows the breakdown of the various line items - the totals here are ex VAT:
