Eskom doesn't have carbon emissions targets

Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd., which accounts for two-fifths of South Africa’s greenhouse-gas emissions, leads the country’s biggest emitters in its failure to set targets to reduce its impact on the climate, a report shows.

The state power utility, which produces most of its electricity from coal, also doesn’t disclose who at the company is responsible for assessing its climate-based risks, the Centre for Environmental Rights said in a report released today. [Bloomberg]

It’s very carbon-inefficient to burn money.

Eskom won't be held to standards. Everyone else however will be forced to chase the ghost.

No carbon targets? Whew. That's a relief. They should forget carbon targets and concentrate on reducing the pollutants that are killing people: nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, particulates, mercury, to name a few. Hundreds of thousands suffer respiratory illnesses caused by emissions from the state-owned utility. Carbon is the least of our worries.
