Eskom explains why load-shedding is back

Deposit paid for PV install which is scheduled for next week to accompany our inverter and batteries which we installed in the beginning of the year. It won't see us off grid but will reduce our reliance on an expensive, unreliable electricity supplier.
 
R16k in solar geyser and R18k in inverter and batteries well spent. fck eskom and fck who supports them and fck whomever supports them.
Yes. and shame for those that dont have. life is tough. i saved up for years since this load shedding crap started.

I'm willing to bet good money that setup does not run your whole house. Also, what do you do when the batteries are dead? Sit in the darkness, right?

With a cheap 34k system? Yes. Unless he sits in the darkness.

Just a thought, why don't you take all the funds for the panel costs and get an extra battery? Then save for the panels? Unless you have a huge daytime electricity bill you want to offset?

My brother has the system as what you are planning, 12x Canadian solar 400W panels, 5kw inverter and a 3.5kwh battery, the panels performs very well and they produce lots of electricity during the day, but due to the inadequate storage most of that energy is lost.

It's recommended to have at least 2 x 3.5kw Pylontech for a 5k Inverter.

Also, with a 5k inverter it will be very easy to pull more power than what 1 x 3.5kw battery can supply.

It's recommended to have at least 2 x 3.5kw Pylontech for a 5k Inverter.

Yeah, energy loss will happen with the initial install. I'll produce a lot more than I can store. I am planning on purchasing a second Pylontech battery at the end of August. I will be expanding to 4 x Pylontech batteries in the end, so I can run the house during the whole night too and charge them up during the day.

The battery will supply 5kw no problem. Just not for very long. Maybe 30mins or so before its dead or at the 80% DOD rate.

When the house pulls more than I have in generation capacity or battery storage, it will pull from the grid. The inverter just switches over.

Are you sure about that?
According to the spec the battery can supply max 100A for 15 seconds only.

True, I think the switchover capability of the inverter will be key, the whole 5kw is over 100A. I think what Tander wants to say is that it will work as long as he keeps the load to a minimum.

Another point is that the load can be supplied by the solar and battery at the same time, so if solar brings in maybe 30A the battery brings in another 30A you can still have a decent load on the inverter.

i would spin my meter backwards during the day to offset the night time cost and use the one battery for loadshedding. then get more batteries as time goes on.

Either way, I won't be pulling anywhere near that. I know exactly what the house uses at any point in time. Night time loads don't go over 2kw if the geyser is not on - and of course, I am not putting the geyser on the system or the stove.

Also true. The inverter does priority. So Solar then Battery then utility. You can change that too.
 
Sounds like a plan if you have that type of meter, how does it work?
it would have to be the old style spinning disk meter and a proper hybrid inverter like a victron, sunsync or goodwe equivalent like this:
just make sure you don't put more in than you take out or your municipality will be knocking on your door.

it would have to have islanding so when the power goes out, you don't kill the guy working on the pole:
