Received the attached mail from Eskom this morning. Has anyone else received this and if so have you registered as an Eskom direct customer and what was the cost of registration? Did you have to pay to have meter in your home changed?

They want you to register so that they can slap a solar levy onto your account. Do not listen to Lupus, do not register your system. I recommend doing 1 of the following:

1. Pretend the email went into the spam folder and you never saw it.
2. Assume this is a scam email and delete it.

What size nappies do you still wear?

1 There's not even a person's name attached to that mail, no addressee, no identified property. Invalid. Eskom can't talk for itself.
2 If you're a muni client. Ignore
3 If you're a direct eskom client. Ignore. They have no mandate to do anything other than disconnecting you...its what you want, right?
4 Where did they get you email if you are not direct

No laws are being broken...Moenie so gou bewe vir 'n epos nie.

They have my email registered with my eskom account. I am an Eskom direct customer.
Would love to go completely off grid but this winter from about 3 weeks ago the ongoing rain in Cape Town has affected my solar production. I therefore would like more info on anyone who has done the registration. Was intending to go completely off grid but the last 3 weeks has me wondering if it is doable.

I don't want to go fully off grid, plus I'm on prepaid and I don't want to change to post paid.
.
Trying to get any clarification but they just clueless and just keep insisting this is the only way even if I don't want to export.

Wonder how many thousands Eskom's being invoiced to get that email sent lol.

A friend of mine has bought a generator to charge his battery when production is bad. Once its up and running he will let me know how it goes. He was on prepaid with Eskom but no longer wants to be on grid once the new Homeflex tariff will be implemented. Also the stories about charges of 30k to 50k to get an engineer to check whole home to give a Coc. Why a normal one won't do is beyond me as Cape Town municipality doesn't expect that. I would have to register by February 2026 or might be cut off from grid or get fined. This is why I want more info as I wonder if Eskom can enforce this.

You going to need a gennie. This is the only reliable way to be Eskom free.

I just want more panels to generate more in Winter.

Lol, I am sorry but I have to laugh when I see these threads heading towards going off grid and this and that but this and that.

Guys, ya'll have kilowatt anxiety. Farmers in the Karoo have been off grid for 100's of years without 74 million one hundred gigawatts of solar, chill your guava's.

Okay cool, I will completely relax now, because farmers have been off grid longer than electricity has been available, I don't need to worry about anything anymore. Damn that will save a hell of a lot of worry about paying the electricity bill if I don't need it anymore.

Come to think of it, I don't need to go to the shops anymore either because farmers have been growing their own food since food was invented, so I can just not worry about that

Wow...makes sense.

I mean humans have been walking for 200 000 years. So who needs cars and trains and planes etc?

What idiots we are.

besides the one person saying "no laws were broken" and ignore it... well municipal by-laws say you have to register your system for compliance etc, so he is wrong

anyway :

1) you will have to have a new bi-directional or smart meter installed to regulate back feed.
2) engineers report on solar panels on roof
3) coc signed off etc
4) municipal forms all signed and sent in
5) then you get whacked with a monthly fee (depending on municipality)

Best bet would be to pop down to a local reputable solar company and ask them how one goes about the whole process and cost. But nothing is cheap, I'd say +R10k easily... some meters are like R10k... just shop around and see whats what.
