Eskom mess requires independent technical enquiry

Ways need to be urgently formulated to relieve the current situation of electricity shortages .
I am sure there are ways to relieve the situation such as banning the sale of ordinary incandescent bulbs ETC.

Why we are load shedding at all?

This is due to unforeseen technical problems at power stations, depleted water reserves and logistical issues relating to diesel supplies at our peaking power stations.

The diesel reserves have been depleted at the Gourikwa and Ankerlig gas turbines leading to the shutdown of the power stations. The Drakensburg and Palmiet pumped storage schemes which use water to generate electricity have reduced output as a result of depleted water reserves.

A further 1 000MW of capacity is offline after three coal powered units tripped last night due to technical faults.

Eskom has also asked major customers to contribute by reducing their usage by 10%.

COMMENT - Of the 13 Eskom board members all are ANC cadre affirmative action except one. Of the 11 Eskom exective managers all are affirmative action except one. And all suppliers are BEE only. There is nothing in or at Eskom based on merit. Are we surprised that the utility is failing the country just like the ANC is incabable of governing the country.

The situation is a result of poor maintenance and planning on the part of Eskom.
Eskom is supposed to have a reserve capacity of ±30% above the normal demand.
If that was in place they could have managed technical and unforeseen situations with ease.
I’m of the opinion that establishing a commission to probe who is at fault will probably result in nothing except for a huge bill that must be paid with money the country can ill afford to waste.

Planning on the part of Eskom has no more forethought than that of my domestic who used to say to me as I was leaving for work, "Please Bwana. The shoe polish/sugar/diesel - she is finished".

Establishing a commission to probe the shambles will have the same result as the Seriti commission which blew R83 million and was never intended to lay any blame where it belonged.

Yep this is 100% correct , a friend of mine is a contractor that does alot of maintenance work for eskom was telling me about a job they did where they asked the eskom electrician where they could plug their extension cord in for power , she was like eish i will go find out , reappeared like 3 hours later and had forgot about it , dumb bish supposed to be the site electrician doesnt even know where the plugs are, the engineer also never leaves his office.

I think Eskom's problems are related to maintenance failures. The water and diesel shortages should not really be an issue because those stations are only peak stations. The problem is outages at the base load stations where things have been allowed to deteriorated for various reasons some of which I suspect are related to aggressive cost cutting to fund the delayed build program and inflate bonuses.
