Eskom preparing for up to stage 16 load-shedding

Why not go up to Stage 24, one for each hour of the day.
 
This is why we need load reduction instead of load shedding
Each household gets throttled at say 1000 Watts of power for 4 hours 3 times a day
I can happily sit and chillax with 1000 Watts of power keeping the lights on, tv on, internet on, fridge on, etc

I am going to suggest this to @Jan for the next time he has a board meeting with ESKOM

I recon Escum should just switch the electricity supply off at stage 10 and send all the workers home.
Start cutting and drying the trees around you, you going to need a good supply of wood to cook, warm water for a skottelbad etc.

That's exactly what the R16 billion smart meter proposal is about but everyone booed the idea. They want to use Demand Side Management which would include peak and off peak tariffs as well as load limiting (limit the peak power you can draw before the meter disconnects the load).

Why are people booing the idea?
I would rather have a tiny bit of ESKOM than none at all
 

I think they are just pointing out that the 32 hour rotation cycle will be maintained under the new schedule. Effectively it is easier to imagine the schedule inverted, so on stage 16 you get zero power, on stage 15 you get 2 hours out of every 32, on stage 14 you get 4 hours out of every 32, etc.

Most of these are extremely unlikely scenarios, but it is easier to publish a schedule now, than revise it at short notice.

True. But there was a time when our current situation was the unlikely situation. South Africa has a way of making the unlikely likely.

I meant to add a paragraph:
Every CPU has a divide by zero trap instruction. It is very unlikely to happen in real life, but has to be coded to stop the whole operating system from crashing due to an extreme condition. Once the offending scenario has ended/been terminated, normal operations can resume.

I already predicted/voted in a previous thread that we will likely get to stage 9 during this winter. We need a schedule update to cater for this scenario. That does not mean that I believe we will get beyond stage 12, at least not this year...

1000 watts that’s laughable. Just because you live like a destitute hobo doesn’t mean we all do.
