Eskom retracts load shedding statement

So a three-day retreat leads to the insight that budget-driven load-shedding isn't necessary after all? Sounds like nonsense. I suspect someone leaned on Molefe and he had to climb down.

It is an election year after all.

What surprises is that as CEO he didn't know his company could come up with alternatives before this retreat. Is it not his job as CEO to look ahead & make plans for such eventualities?

Exactly. And I'm pretty sure he knows.

The worrying thing is that his original statement probably isn't wrong. Less and less people are paying for more and more others, and Eskom's finances look worse than ever.

I suspect the pols leaned on him to withdraw that statement because they're looking at votes and not as Eskom.

Certain municipalities are in arrears, he added, because they are not able to adjust the increase in electricity tariffs. “We are helping them and proposing to act as a sub-contractor to help them with revenue collection.”

Wow. So what is the point of having a municipality if they cannot manage their core function? How is the national government going to take over the responsibilities of all these municipalities? Typical ANC, don't go after the people not doing their jobs, lets rather help them and do the work for them. And why are they "not able to adjust the increase in electricity tariffs"? Are some municipalities not allowed to increase the cost of electricity for their citizens?

I hope the ANC lose a k@k-load of districts!

We need a government who is capable of managing income vs. expenses, and get rid of municipal workers and government officials who are growing fat and rich at the expense of the masses!

I heard from my sister-in-law, that their Munisipality(Oudshoorn) is broke and her son, who works there, has to take a 40% pay cut, as they don't have money to pay the workers. ANC ran it into the ground.

I live in Oudtshoorn now - moved from Joburg about 6 years ago.

Once a jewel in the Little Karoo, well-maintained and financially stable, the place is falling apart. Very, very sad.

And one can't blame just the ANC. Several of the DA councillors have been just as bad. It's a skande. And several of the big wheels in the local Business Chamber are apparently milking the situation to their own advantage. Outrageous.

The retraction is done, purely because it showed that they are blackmailing. They realised their mistake after saying it...

Have you ever considered the DA's hands were perhaps tied due to the ANC's monopoly?

It's the people who live in the districts as well. A lot of people pay for services they don't receive, and a lot of people expect services for free!

No one is going to maintain anything unless money is thrown at them, but because certain individuals are milking the masses dry...everyone has lost interest!

I solely blame the ANC because they promised free service delivery and millions of jobs, but they're providing the opposite. If you look at how well the WC is doing, where the DA actually has control over everything, it's a different story...

donner. I need to do some maintenance I reckon and run it a bit. fsuck 'em. after elections its open season on load shedding.

The guy should just stop talking, he should have said the power will be fine for the future and that is it. We are on the edge of being down graded to junk status and stable electricity is a very big player in that decision.

I'm quite surprised by this. Aren't ANC members usually misquoted?

Didn't BusinessTech call the statement a threat?

And are threats to the security of the nation not classified as treason?
