Eskom scraps solar registration requirements

Great news for solar power users in South Africa

Eskom has scrapped a requirement for households with grid-tied rooftop solar power to get sign-off for their systems from persons registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (Ecsa).

The change forms part of a simplified compliance and registration process for Eskom's small-scale embedded generation (SSEG) customers.
 
because they didn't have a legal leg to stand on unlike our dictator like munies and their bylaws where if you don't follow their idiotic rules, they can add your fines to your rates bill and if you don't pay that then you can't sell your house.

Not how I understand it. There's no requirement for off grid systems less than 100MVA to register. Grid tied systems only have to register as part of the electrical safety standards.

Why would I if I want to go off-grid? No cable so no messing up their grid.

My inverter already has no connection to the grid, no physical cable goes to the inverter from the DB board feeding it Eskom

Nah, not when you have to pay R650 per month for the line. Just disconnect, no registration.
 
IMO the registration costs they were trying to make us pay was always negligible compared to the cost of changing to the home flex tariff. If you currently have solar with home light 60A prepaid then by calculation on my usage, annual electricity costs will more than double.

That's why they want you to register.
 
Okay, this is still as clear as mud. If you are an Ethekwini electricity customer do I still need to register my system? If so with whom and what do I need. Maybe MyBroadband can do a full article saying who needs to register with whom. When I first read these stories, it seemed like it was only Eskom direct customers?? I could be very wrong here.

I also wanted to find out when/If I register, what changes , do they now put me on a more expensive tariff, change my meter etc.

@wingnut771 I see you are in Durban, have you registered your system any advice?

This article is for Eskom direct flexing. There is no flexing in Durban. If you want to feed into the grid in Durban you will have to register and pay an exorbitant amount in line fees, something like R100 per kVA iirc. So dont register, just carry on carrying on not paying any line fees.
