They need to start thinking outside of the box now. Perhaps rename the price increase.

Here are some of the new line items added to homepower standard eskom direct accounts post-April 2025:

- service & admin charge (charged per day for full billing period)
- generation capacity charge (charged per day for full billing period)
- ancillary service charge (charged per kwh used for full billing period)
- network demand charge (charged per kwh used for full billing period)

Now if that isn't thinking outside the box to add some fancy sounding fluff to vastly inflate their already outrageous 12.75% increase, I don't know what is.

I don't know yet exactly but it's a shedload more. What it does is to shift the focus from consumption and simply build in costs from the get-go, while also punishing the user for consumption for good measure.

Prior to April, this tariff type worked on a two-tier consumption system. Use more than 600kWh and you pay a higher rate per kwh, with only network capacity fee being a daily flat rate. This also meant that pv generation was worth a lot more in terms of rands saved once your grid consumption + pv generation exceeded the tier threshold. Now? Not so much.

CoJ: R1000 = 283.3kWh Prepaid = R2.53/kWh - F$CK them.
I'm currently 80% self generation.
Best investment ever.
Will be payed off in ~7 years total (3.5 years left) all without grid feeding.
Would have paid off sooner if grid feeding was a thing in JHB.
Will be adding some capacity soon to go to 95% self generation.

Not sure what the Eskom surprise is.
What does Eskom expect?
They gave us load shedding.
They increased the costs - more expensive than Home Solar+Battery.
They gave us pollution.
Now they surprised people are going for the less expensive more reliable and clean, environmentally friendly option?

I paid ~R5,000/kWh a few years ago - and it still made financial sense.

With these (ultrasolarcity) prices, everyone should have a battery.

and charging them from cheap wheeling power IPP from solar and wind and use at night instead of expensive Eskom.

Currently also generating 75%-80% of my needs and will add 4-5 panels by the end of the year.
Plan was to do it earlier this year but had so many expenses.
