I have a few clients using adsl for their business, if the adsl is down they cant work. It's driving me mad and it's driving my clients bonkers because it's always dropping the connection.

They are based in Athlone mainly and have mweb accounts, using netgear routers. The area often has load shedding, would the power cuts be causing the adsl to drop? or would it be the cable theft at the exchange?

Must a fault be logged with telkom for them to check the problem?

Do your clients have UPS's installed for their switches and routers?

Telkom's main switches all have MG sets, so although they may go off line momentarily, should come up again within a few minutes.

As far as I know the telephone lines have their own power source. So loadshedding should not be a problem (obviously providing you have electricity). Sounds like an exchnage problem though. You may need to check the stats (namely SNR and Attenuation), I personally have been having problems with a lot of noise on the line, resulting in dropped connections.

well the sync light on the router stays on, and i can ping DNS servers 196.25.1.11 and 196.43.1.11 but i cant ping any websites or telkom.co.za.
oh my clients use linux suse 8.0 which sucks caus i dont have a friggin laptop to log into the router. i normally log into the router remotely..

First things first: Do they have port filters installed on the phone, alarms, faxes etc?

Next, post some SNR stats from the router.

i have to try log into the router.. and check the lines.. the should have the filter that comes with the router plugged into the phone, otherwise i must check for a fax machine.

Interesting title for a thread...:
I'm currently running on a high-capacity UPS and on 3G because my area is currently in a blackout, however it WAS NOT SCHEDULED for loadshedding this evening.
Additionally, my telkom lines are down and have been down for nearly 2 months now (copper cables stolen from ground).

So yeah, besides for my water supply, no other public services are functioning for me. Lovely hey? Obviously water's next!! :):):):):):):)

I know this post is nothing but a rant, but it's here so that if anyone else is experiencing pure **** service from ESKOM/TELKOM, don't worry you're not alone.

ok well, thanks for suggestions but the problem has been fixed.
my client was using mweb ADSL accounts that can be used twice, but the one router was trying to connect to an account for the third time.
somehow the ADSL username and password was changed on another router. I used a new username and password and everything worked fine.

I hate it when someone obviously changes something and i dont know about it until it causes a problem!
