Eskom wants 16% tariff increase

Switch to Solar Geysers, switch to cooking with gas. Switch to LED lights that are powered by Solar Panels at least when load shedding starts you sorted. Wonder how much a solar panel costs in South Africa?

None of which can be done in a block of flats a.k.a. apartment complex....

Why? All it takes is to ensure you do not go foul of your insurers and then a resolution by the body corporate at the AGM.

We are busy with this at the moment, waiting for some solar companies to get back to us on how we can provide the lower floors in a manner that wont look too horrible. We have decided to only have solar panels on the roof and the actual geysers inside the owners units.

Luckily we have enough roof area to cater for all owners if they choose to participate. Each owner will be responsible for the costs themselves and it is optional.
 
I would give my left ball to pay 61c a kWhour. Thing is, CityPower goes and adds on nearly 50% just for being the innefficient fsk-up of a middle man. Imagine what their over-charge is going to be when their input cost from Eskom hits 128c :cry:
 
I cant believe it, We pay tax on food, petrol , *****, we pay tax on everything now, and now the bloody power is going up again. I have a prepaid meter, and i just paid R200 for 132Units last week. So next year i will pay R200 for 70 Units for example. But when you get a increase on your salary, then its like 3% to 5%. Then if you fall in that lekker tax bracket again, then that increase was for nothing. The country will be poor like Botswana one day.

That makes Eskom sense - as long as it's paid for it's legal....

it makes business sense! if i distribute niknaks and you take them into zimbabwe and resell them without paying import taxes etc. whose problem is it? mine or yours? eskom can't monitor what their customers are doing after the metering point (point of sale in the previous analogy). even when eskom does try to take down actual illegal connections, as soon as the eskom guys leave the site the illegal connections start being put in again.
 
The problem with going off the grid it costs massive amounts of money which takes years and years to recuperate. Also within those years you might have equipment failure which means you might never break even.


Most people who go off the grid do so because they have to, ie. there's no Eskom in their area, and not to save money

Well that's why most people haven't done it yet, but with the electricity price doubling every few years and the price of solar panels coming down, it's going to begin to make a lot of sense fairly soon. :)

But if you live any outside the KZN coast geo-thermal heating seems a great way to money
