Hi all,

Has anyone used the Esquire DVIX Media Player?
http://www.shopeasy.co.za/ProductDescription.aspx?id=441471

I have my eyes set on the Playtime/iptime player (SATA-based), but would also like to watch archived HD-WMV 720p holiday videos from my camcorder etc. from it on a 32" LCD. Can the playtime play HD content and how well does it do the job?

Any ideas?:)

thanks.

As a standard DivX/MP3/JPG viewer through RCA it works fine, for some reason I couldn't get the component side to work on my dad's LCD. It was a Sansui though so it could've been the screen giving problems rather than the player. Otherwise, its pretty functional, the remote it comes with is 1000x better than the one you get with the iptime.

Bought one to play adverts on a screen for work and it's very fiddly with file types so it's probably better to spend the extra for an Mvix player.

Most are unfortunately, .mov etc ftl :(

I was using Avi's and it was giving me problems. I'd converted them from MP4's to AVI's and it still gave errors. In the end had to convert them to VOB files which is obviously not conducive.

get a mvix they are much better worth the extra money!!

Mvix 600R or iptime/playtime 0102?

Choices, choices:)

that's right - meant the 6000R, sorry:)

however it doesn't output HD, whereas the playtime does - albeit over component.

Mvix 780HD looks like the best but also the priciest.

the thing is that most hd rips out there are *.mkv files which mvix cant play in anycase no matter the model, so depending on what u want to play??

basically just high-definition content from my camcorder (will convert to wmv HD).

Archiving the camcorder content onto hdd will be much better and more reliable imo, than burning to DVDs as I will need them to last at least 10-15 years.

chek out www.mvix.co.za and ask them if the mvix supports wmv HD, go to the contact section or specs of mvix, i dont know if it can, ul need to check tho...

I've being using the iptime for 2 years now and not a single problem.I have 160 movies and 10 series on the HDD in dvix. The inside components of the two units, iptime and Mvix are the same just the external casing is completely different. You paying extra for looks. As far as HD goes I've never tried it, will look into getting one sometime this year

Esquire has new firmware upgrade to Esquire Divx ED328TV

Hi Guys
Arnie my sales rep here in Cape Town branch just informed me that they just got in the Firmware upgrade for the Esquire ED328TV Divx players and says it fixes about 99% of all the known issues such as the limitation on the files names and poor picture quality , he also said that the unit needs to be taken in for the upgrade as the process is tricky , I know someone on the forum was moaning bout the file names only limted to 8 characters but can't find that post, apprently the new firmware allows you up to 18 characters and the
has a more user friendly menu.

I have a standard LG DivX DVD Player... I been playing that I ripped 7 years ago on that thing with no problem whatsoever. My AVI's from back then were all encoded with different codecs too. Not sure about .mov tho... I think I'll try that out today. Only trouble is there's no USB port etc...

Mine was R500 but my bro has a Wharfedale which was a whole R50 more expensive and also play just about anything.

I have the Mvix 760HD which supports up 720p and 1080i. No problems with it and it plays everything (DIVX, XVID, VOB, ISO AVI, MPG. It uses the same chipset as the newer 780HD except that the 780HD has a HDMI output whereas the 760HD has a DVI output. You can even upload hacked firmware which makes the 760 think its 780 as the shipsets are the same. The latest firmware even supports internet radio. The unit has served me very well over the last 2 years.

To futureproof yourself with HD, it would be best going with a unit which supports h264. I am looking at the Popcorn Hour A-110. www.compafrica.co.za is the SA distributor. The following sites give excellent info on the MVIX players and Pocorn Hour units.

compafrica has no stock of popcorn, i phoned them the other day i wana get a popcorn hr, i have a 760 hd at the mo, its a pain that it doesnt support h264 and a pc does a much better job at up scaling than mvix...

Compafrica said they should have stock of Popcorn by end August. Don't know if it will be the A-110 or A-110 (new model) Also they will be having them on sale at Rage at a special price. Guess I will have to wait till Oct for that.
