Hi

I was wondering if anybody on the forum have used this company for their medical:

http://www.essentialmed.co.za

If you have, could you please post some of your experiences. It seems very affordable at R485 per member.

I was very happy with Fedhealth but their monthly contributions were running to R1700 pm for standard option, which is a bit much.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just read through their FAQs,they dont cover specialists so it explains why it is so cheap. You get what you pay for.Im keen to see if anyone else has a suggestion about this.

Hmm I wonder how many visits to a GP ends up in a referral to a specialist (percentage-wise). What I do like is that they do seem to cover all dental basics 100%. Obviously you have to pay yourself for the more hardcore stuff.

The one thing I don't like is that if I go with this it seems I will have to switch to one of their doctors, since I am only allowed 3 visits per year to a doctor that is not on their Crosscare database.

My brother added my kids to his plan with essential. They have both been to the doc and dentist a few times and I havent paid a cent(routine stuff/check-ups and for common ailments) Havent had any problems..thankfully, in our area there are a few docs covered by their plan. We havent needed to use specialists of any sort so dont have an opinion on that part. The hosptal plan is abit lame but yep, for what you pay its better than having nothing and a kick up the arse should we need it.

Personally I think if you have small kids, the day to day plan is awesome as I know how quick kids can deplete savings on a normal medical aid..and then invest in a hospital plan...

I know of many other peeps on this Essential Med plan. They're national and as far as I can make out, quite big. Judging from the small number of Hellopeter complaints against them, they can't be too bad. Compared to One other Plan I've come across, they appear to be the smarter choice. And I'm fortunate enough that my GP is already on their network. Let's see...
