I am currently a Vodacom prepaid customer. I want to to port to Cell C. My main concern is call quality. My job requires me to travel all over Gauteng. How would you rate the current call quality of Cell C?

I rate it as excellent. But my phone (SGS1) is permanently on the "3G only" band. So I can't speak for GSM on Cell C.

Maybe get a prepaid 99c sim, load some airtime and make a few calls from typical locations on your travels and decide for yourself. It's risky making a decision based on someone's experience elsewhere even on the same network. The same goes for data connections.

Thanks I have a Samsung Nexus S so it should also be on '3G' the whole time. Will test with a prepaid sim.

In Cape Town call quality is good, no problems at all - don't know if that reflects the quality in Jhb, though I suspect it does (since I speak to people in Jhb all the time). CellC customer service is shockingly bad though...

I had same concerns as you - was with Mtn. Tested with prepaid and found that I actually had fewer dropped calls and breaking up issues with cell c than with Mtn, so I ported. I spend most of my time in Sandton though. Mtn is horrible in sandton, phone almost never have 3G in sandton when on Mtn, but always 3G on cell c.

My in-laws are on Cell C in Cape Town and they have no complaints either. I am on MTN and rarely ever have 3G and GSM reception is even worse. However when Cell C 3G card is used in the same area the 3G is brilliant, always reception and no hassles. So if that is anything to go by I do not think Cell C will give issues.

I am in JHB. I just ported to cellc this weekend.

Before I did this, I bought the prepaid 99c for real starter pack and tested the signal quality for a few days. It was fine. Since porting, also no issues.

The few times I have had sketchy reception, I just scan networks and select vodacom. They roam on voda as far as I'm aware. You will only have edge speeds for data when roaming. So if you have voda reception you will have Cellc.
