it works!

*does little happy dance* [:D]

dang! it works!

Skay. So I picked up my ethernet cable from ODS last night (Thanks guys)

So I get home and decide to try the modem to switch route first - I take the crossover cable that I got from ODS as well, plug it into my switch and into the modem... doesn't work. The light for the port where I plug it into doesn't come on on the switch at all - now I'm getting worried.

So I dig up another NIC from somewhere in a dark cupboard and chuck that into the gateway machine, plug a normal UTP cable into that, and connect the modem to that, using the little connector thingie.

Try and run the dialer - nothing.

Getting more worried.

And for the first time in my life with Sentech, the helpdesk proved useful! MAJOR kudos to Tristan - good job mate!

So Tristan walked me through setting up a PPPoE connection in XP - and the thing connected! i almost went through the roof! In a good way [:D]

I don't know whether I'm just being paranoid, but I can swear that my connection is better since the swop! My speeds were quite good last night, save for a while after 11 - slowed down then. And it's quite stable as well. Only got one disconnect last night.

My question is though - how do I now see which tower I'm connected to? Do I have to plug the USB cable back in to check that?

's okay though. I don't really need to see. If it's fast, it's on 82, if not, it's on 12 [:)]

So, i'm a happy camper...

Hey Kai. Glad to hear its working.
Would you mind doing us all a big favour, and post the basic setup procedure. Im getting another ethernet cbl this week, and it would be nice to have a setup reference to check against. I also know of a few other ppl who will need this info as well. Thanks.

Setting up the PPPoE under Windows XP is very easy, no need for the crap that's included on the Sentech install CD, just add new connection, choose PPPoE in the Wizard, put in username and password, and you're set.

cool. here we go.

1. Get the MyWi Ethernet Cable (round about R285.00 incl VAT)
2. If the modem is going to be far away from your PC: Get the MyWi to UTP cable connector to allow you to lengthen the cable. If you're plugging the modem into your hub/switch, get a crossover cable(note that some switches do NOT support PPPoE properly, so the modem won't get picked up) - the whole "have to use a crossover cable when plugging into a switch" comes from one of the guys at ODS, don't know if it's the correct info. Didn't work for me)
3. If you're not plugging directly into your hub/switch, install an extra network card into the machine you want to connect the modem to and plug the modem into it (or use the modem -> Connector -> UTP Cable -> NIC)
4. If you used to have the USB connector, uninstall and reinstall the dailer software, using the "Ethernet Cable" selection. This is basically just to install the PPPoE drivers for the modem. If you didn't have the USB software before (new install), as far as I know, you'll have to install the modem with the USB cable first to set up the connection details on the modem. Then you can uninstall it and redo it with the Ethernet setup. I'm not entirely sure about having to do the USB setup first, but I read somewhere that that's needed.
5. Don't worry about the software picking up the modem during the installation, it doesn't "look" for it like in the USB setup :)
6. When the installation asks you to register, don't.
7. Complete the installation and restart your machine.

K. now for the juicy part.

These instructions are for Windows XP, hopefully it doesn't differ much on another OS.

1. Go to "Control Panel" and depending on whether you use Category view or Classic view, "Network and Internet Connections", "Network Connections"(Category View) or just "Network Connetions"(Classic View)
2. In the top left corner, click on "Create a new connection" - the "New Connection" wizard will open
3. Read the blah-blah if you want to, and Click "Next"
4. Check the "Connect to the Internet" radio button and click "Next"
5. Check "Set up my connection manually" and click "Next"
6. Check "Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password" and click "Next"
7. ISP Name: Sentech, or whatever you want. Click "Next"
8. Specify your username, password and confirm the password. Also, read the three checkboxes and decide which ones you want
9. Check the "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop" if you want it and click "Finish"

All you do now is double-click on the shortcut on your desktop (if you chose to have one) or go to "Start", "Connect to", "Sentech" and Bob's your aunty...

And that, ladies and germs... is that... well, it's supposed to be. That's what I did.

If you get stuck, believe it or not, you can phone the Sentech helpdesk, Tristan can help.

Do you not use anything out of the PPPoE directory on the CD ?

my question as well Rhino. it installed some PPPoE stuff during the setup.

Does anyone know how to get tower info off the PPPOE?

ProASM - how would you troubleshoot PPPOE problems?

-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<-<

...and Gandalf stared into the distance with a faraway look of gold...

Could anyone tell me if this scenario would work. Im trying to get around purchasing the UTP cable for ethernet cos Im in Cape Town I just know thats gonna be another sad story to get removed from this forum...

I wanna use a laptop as my server. Its an old PII compaq with a pcmcia port and 1 USB port. No onboard LAN port. I have ordered MyWireless with the PCMCIA option, not USB and I would preferably want to use IPCop as the firewall, but 98SE will do if I cant get IPCop to pick up the PCMCIA card. Now the question is. Does the PCMCIA act as a modem or as a PPPoE connector? If not, and it appears and acts like a standard modem, surely I can just configure it as normal, and then run a USB to ethernet LAN connector to my switch, (striaght cable) and then bob should be my aunty (too).

My aplogies to some "senior" members who have already crapped me out for posting this question elsewhere, telling me to search for it, but I think this is a fairly uniques situation and I would appreciate help. Otherwise, maybe someone could volunteer to get one of those cables to me in a reliable manner. Is there a local distributor in CT perhaps? Who distributes these cables. Can I make one up somewhere.

"oh bother" said pooh, as the last standing Telkom employee is blown to pieces with his minigun

The PCMCIA card's interface is proprietary, and not PPPoE. You will in all likelihood have zero success in getting IPCop to work with it with the lack of driver. Some fellows in New Zealand have claimed to write a PCMCIA driver but they haven't given me any news on it yet.

Quite honestly, I would go for the normal USB modem (as there's no difference in modem access speeds between USB and PCMCIA) and use a PCMCIA network adapter to get the notebook on the network for connection sharing.

Only one (poor) other fellow has the PCMCIA modem and he's run into all kinds of compatibility problems with ProAsm's MySignal, the firmware upgrade and Nic's MyTransponder application.

Plus, with the PCMCIA modem you can only EVER connect it to a machine with a PCMCIA slot. Usb will give you the flexibility to directly connect it to Ethernet later on, or to another machine with only USB sockets. The PCMCIA modem will not directly connect to Ethernet either, so don't bother ordering that UTP cable you won't be able to use it.

Drop the PCMCIA modem, it poses too many disadvantages, and no tangible benefits against the normal modem.

To answer the questions concerning signal strength etc via ethernet....

Uninstall the existing Sentech MyWireless software. Restart. Re-install (selecting ethernet as the connection type). This will now let you use the Sentech dialler with it's Signal strength indication etc.

For those happy to play with the registry you could simply change a key and the software should work in PPPoE mode (under XP anyway)....:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IPWireless Inc.\IPWireless Modem Software
Look for the Item saying : "Connector" ... change this from "USB" to "PPPoE"

regardtv, i've tried that, and it doesn't pick up the modem at all.

But i'll try the registry setting and see if that works.

i LOVE this forum! there's always someone that can help with ANY problem that you might have with MyWi!

kudos guys!

Hello Kai,

Strange that it does not work 4 you. I'm running that setup (or rather I was - ethernet cable died last night).

The way in which IPWireless gets the singalling info via PPPoE is to use custom extensions to the PPPoE spec. I've done some basic checking into this but I've been to hectic to take if forward. IMO it would be possible to get the data - even while connected (not that I've seen that work anywhere)...

If/When I get the time I'll write the extensions - but it will be under linux with rp-pppoe as that's my environment.

ProASM did mention a while back that he may look into it for MySignal - but I recon he's too snowed to get to that right now ;-)

Are you based in JHB ? Gimme a mail.

yep, i'm in Jhb

yeah... doesn't find the modem at all. Just says that the modem is not plugged in, powered or connected - you know, like it's unplugged?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software. I didn't restart inbetween though, so could that be why?

I'll try that, and then the registry setting. Or, I'll try the registry setting first.

still at work, working late... ugh.

Kai,

Had a faulty ethernet cable .. got a new one ... now I have EXACTLY the same problem .. not only that I can now no longer connect the unit via anything but USB ... It's as if the modem does not switch over to ethernet mode .... GGGrrr
