Are you supposed to also get an ethernet cable in the Sentech mywireless modem package ?

I just got a USB connector.

Is it the same connection as a PCMCIA ethernet cable ?

The ethernet cable is NO better than the USB cable. Even a USB 1.1 host controller can handle 12Mb/s, which is way more than what Sentech will ever give you.

The only reason for wanting an Ethernet cable used to be running Linux, and there is a Linux driver available now. Only other reasons I can think for wanting an Ethernet cable is if you want to setup a router or something that understands PPPoE, or you're running some other *nix.

That's exactly what I want to do. I run smoothwall as a firewall (www.smoothwall.org) so I want to see if I can get it running PPPoE.

I'll try Cablelink in Strijdom park - they may a cable that'll do the job for cheap.

If that doesn't hack it, then I'll try the Linux drivers on my slackware box and set it up as a firewall instead.

Another reason would be if you get signal further than 10m from the PC, then you can run ethernet all the way without the limitation of USB cable length.

I can't believe the cable is not suddenly R250, I bought it for R150 when MyWireless just started...

bb_matt, Cablelink don't have this cable, it's a custom cable with a little box in the middle which might contain circuitry. I'd like to see noone disect the cable and tell us what's inside [;)]
I'm not gonna risk breaking the cable by opening it, since I rely on it.

c'mon noone, I know you wanna [:D]

R230 from nowire (linked from fastcomm)

You know, considering how much your paying for the modem over a 24 month contract, you'd think they'd include an ethernet cable as well !

(or at least ask which cable you prefer)

That's just the funny thing. According to ipwireless there's two packages, one with USB cable and one with Ethernet cable. I bet sentech/fastcomm only ordered the USB packages, and bought the Ethernet cables afterwards.
