Can someone explain to me how the ethernet cable setup for the MyWireless modem works, please?

I haven't had any luck getting my game working even using gateway software (ICS SUCKS! [}:)]), so now I have to get the modem set up on my PC where i play the game from, sharing the connection for browsers on the rest of the network.

the only problem is that i only have signal in the room next door where the gateway PC is standing at the moment. there's about a 6-7 meter gap between where I have signal and where my PC is standing.

I was thinking about getting a USB extension cable, but they only go up to 5 meters. I can get longer, but they are EXTREMELY expensive at R270 ex VAT for a 5 meter cable with a booster. It would cost me R900-odd to get a 10 meter one (it needs some other connectors apparently)

So, one of two choices:

1. I get a patch antenna with a cable from there to my PC, IF i can make the cable from the antenna 10 meters long
2. I get the ethernet setup and plug the modem into my switch (if that's how it works)

any tips/information/suggestions from anyone on whether the ethernet setup will work?

Get the ethernet cable @ 250 (i bought mine for 150, hahaha)
Then buy one of those connector thingies you usually see @ your workplace, make it so that it goes straight into another connector thingy, then run a normal CAT5 cable from there to your other PC?

my gawd! LOL!!

i have NO idea what you just typed!!!

noone - funny, but not helpful. mind repeating that? and try to make some sense this time mate.

come on guys, i need help here. enough with the poking fun. please.

what he is saying is you "extend" the ethernet cable using a normal wall socket (like your phone) where you plug your CAT5 UTP RJ45 netowrk jack into. Since from the modem - to - PC the data is already digital you can extend it with no "Loss". Up to 125m or something though (for ethernet). So you go to your network cable supplier, get one of those boxes, then one connector (ie RJ45 jack) and some 10m cable. Then you plug the ethernet modem cable into the jack and then the cable (with jack) coming from the box into your PC. So you will need to buy another cable from fastcomm and another NIC. Plus 10m cable and 1x jack and 1x box.

ack! so i have to buy TWO ethernet cables from fastcomm at R250 each?!

damn! [V]

just looking at the distance between the modem and the switch now. don't think it's actually more than five meters.

how long is that ethernet cable?

seen as fastcomm has a WEALTH of information wrt the cables/antennas on there site! [}:)]

i have a spare hub laying around here. would that work as well? :)

i.e - plug the modem into the hub, other network cable from that hub into my switch - to the rest of the machines?

You only need one fastcomm ethernet cable. Then you get a joiner box and a standard 10m flylead (prefab is easiest)

Hook the fastcomm cable up to the modem, plug the other end into the joiner box and plug the flylead into the joiner box aswell. Now you should have about 12m is cable to play with [:)]

The ethernet cable can be plugged into a hub's uplink port, or directly into a nic.

again, i'm not so good with the whole being smart thing - uplink port? Whassat? [:I]

I have an Acton 16 port switch - it's quite old but it does the job.

Then I also have an 8 port hub.

how would the connection work when set up like that? Do I still need Internet Connection Sharing?

Here's what you do:
1. Put the hub in the room where your modem is.
2. Plug modem ethernet cable into hub's cross-over (uplink) port.
3. Run an ethernet cable to the hub from the other PC and plug it into any other port of the hub.

Most hubs have one port (usually marked with an X, or with a button that switches the port between normal/cross-over mode) that you can plug the Fastcomm ethernet cable into. On the Accton hub it should be port 16.

Wrt the internet connection sharing: You will still need it. I haven't tried setting it up using a LAN connection, but I just checked and it seems you can.

The ideal solution, is to have a seperate network card for the modem, but if you're like me, and you don't have any spare network cards lying around, then the hub is good enough.

right. thanks groenie.

so, this is what i do

switch ---(normal UTP)--- hub ---(fastcomm cable)--- modem

other PCs

if you don't mind me asking, where'd you check if you can set it up for LAN connection - 'cos that's what I want to do. I don't want to struggle with ICS anymore - I'm sick of it! and eventhough Kerio is the most fantastic thing since sliced bread AND sliced cheese - I can't get NAT sorted out on it to make my game work - i'm getting withdrawal symptoms! flash - are there any drawbacks to using the hub solution?

if the fastcomm cable is long enough, could it go directly into the 16th port of my switch?

Hi, the only drawback in my case is, the switch doesn't sit on my UPS, so if the power trips, my internet connection drops.

You still need to run winroute to share the connection. The modem does not act as a router..

crap. then it's not going to help me at all.

i have winroute set up so browsing works, i just can't get my game to work.

and i'm sure i'm almost there, i just have to get the routing sorted out... but i'm not winning...

argh!!!! [V][V][V][V]

i would PAY someone to sort this out for me!!!

Use the above setup to play the game and thus connect on the SWG PC. With winroute there shouldnt be a routing problem on the gateway PC since the IP address/ports are that PC's. Or at least its a whole lot easier to create the rules.. no port forwarding.

I say try the whole modem into switch idea. Sounds like it could work.

Yes, that will work. But for the other PCs on the LAN to access the net, that machine will have to run a proxy or NAT of some sort (winroute etc)

flash - you have?!

let me know when you get it, then i can let you know what server I play on.

how'd you manage to get your grubby paws on it? :)

going a different route (hehehe - pun) now.

getting a hardware router - well, finding out more about them first... and THEN getting it. :)

if i don't use a router, and I plug the modem into the switch, i'll still have to do NAT or ICS or something like that - and that's where the problem comes in.

flash, i am starting to like (well, not like, but it looks like an option) the idea of a Linux box. all i need now is someone who can set it up for me! LOL!

i fall else fails, then i'll get the ethernet cable, connect the modem to the SWG machine and share it from there.

what complicates things a bit, is that i'm not the only person on the network playing SWG :)

so, how'd you get your hands on it? did you buy it off someone?

you actually going to play, or just going to test it?
