Ethnicity options on forms

They should have only two options on those forms :
Native or Foreign National...:p

And the "other" option should return. There are more than 4 ethnicities in the world.

What I find interesting in this discussion is not the African vs White part of the form - I think we all understand what is intended by that, no matter how offensive it may be to some. But African...Coloured

Are "coloured" folk suddenly not African? And by that, I mean of African ancestry (which I believe may be the intention of the form).

I'm a little technical at times.. but this confuses me.

There are two relevant Ethnicity options for me when I'm filling out a form: African or White.
(The options are: African, Coloured, Foreign National, Indian, White)

I'm a born and bred Caucasian South African.
So, should I prioritize that my skin is white above being African? That would be racist. And Mandella said that we're all one nation... so by his words, I'm rightfully African and then White.

A lot of folks would argue to just say White and get on with it. But I take offence in not being able to say on something as simple as a form that I'm proudly South African.

I also get very irritated with this question of forms. I always feel like drawing a line right through it.

I have had the bewildering option of 'Asian' in a lot of forms at work... When attending courses or sometimes attendance registers for meetings...

I ask myself... Do i come from fsckin Asia ?

Hell No !!!!

I then proceed to not tick any option and write down N/A !!!

*looks at username* yeah, you come from Asia. :D

But seriously, these forms are about ETHNICITY not Nationality. You can have a Chinese guy that's lived his entire life in Denmark and never been to China. Doesn't make him Danish. Ethnically he's still Chinese. Perhaps culturally he's Danish.

I accept, British, English and Caucasian, but no way am I European.

But my wife is definately a Caucasian African.

When it comes to these BS forms, I'm willing to offer the following deal:

I will consent to listing myself as "White" if every "Black" person in South Africa lists themselves as "Other" or "<region of origin>".

If you want to think like a box, in a box, then unless you can directly and without interruption, trace your lineage back to the Hottentots, you are NOT, by today's border classification, "South African". Europeans and "Blacks" arrived here at approximately the same time.

The Khoisan's original locality, as far as I can recall, is ever so slightly north of of today's border.

There is a massive echo around here...

Doesn't matter who was here first, point is we are all here now and we are all South Africans. According to you the Americans, Australians, Canadians, Brazilians , Argentinians etc cannot call themselves that because they arrived in their respective countries only in the past millennium.

Might as well say that this earth belongs to the dinosaurs that were here long before us:erm:

According to the ANC I, as a "White", am not a South African.

By their very definition, neither are they "South African".
